I think Spring is finally here:eyes: and as promised on a thread last winter I'm posting this up. 2 hours of commuting with 8 hours of desk job in the middle every week day are killing me. Time to get back to doing more of the other things I enjoy and get in better shape for a backpacking trip towards the end of Summer and exploring more ruins in Southern Utah.
Hiking;
Tomorrow - Storm Mountain via Furgeson Canyon
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/xjblue/93%20Cherokee/commute01.jpg
I know this is very short notice and some of you will be in Moab, but anyone interested in tagging along is welcome. I decided to do it this morning on the way to work. If you don't want to summit with me (9.9 miles round trip + 4,280ft) the lower canyon, a popular rock climbing area, is nice and cool and very inviting for a nice short hike.
http://www.photozo.com/album/data/4255/P5172864a.JPG
There is a decent overlook (3 miles round trip +1,600 ft) to shoot for as well if a moderate hike is up your alley. I hiked to the overlook a couple weeks ago.
To reach this iconic big cottenwood canyon false summit on the shoulder of Broads Fork Twin Peaks, well it is the stairmaster 4000, where much of the upper trail is narrow and overgrown. There is a short easy scramble at the top. I tend to hate this hike above the overlook but it kicks my rear in to shape. Bring a backpack w/ lunch, a jacket, sunscreen, camera, gators and/or waterproof boots in case of some lingering snow or for all the streem crossings lower down. I'll be hauling all my camera gear & trypod to shoot one of the waterfalls in the morning light on the way up. I'm planning on spending 6 hours and starting at 8AM.

Next Hike; Pfeifferhorn
http://www.climb-utah.com/WM/pfeifferhorn.htm
A personal favorite. I want to do this before all the upper level spring snow fields melt, Possibly on 6/14. Shorter options along the same trail include Maybird Gulch, Red Pin Lake, or the overlook of Little cottenwood canyon.
Mountain Biking
I would like to start riding Wed. and Fri. evenings after work on the trails around Heber and Park City around 6pm, though with the days getting longer some Salt Lake Valley trails or Meuller Park would be doable for 6:30 to 7:00 pm starts.
Post up if you have any interest. Please post up if/when any of you might have your own plans to hike or mountain bike this summer as well. Might as well throw in Backpacking too.
So far I know Stratton likes to bike, Tom likes to hike, and Bryon is in to backpacking...
I started out hiking the Wasatch Mountains occasionally with the scouts way back when. Got serious about it in 1990 and also started "real" Mountain Biking that year. One of the main reasons I purchase a Cherokee was to support these activities and expand them to other parts of the state more easily.
I might be up for some mtn biking, I'm riding my road bike about 8 miles a day for part of my commute now to get in shape (and save $$). I'll stretch that out to about 15 a day and be ready in a few weeks. I have been on the "bobsled" behind City Creek and a nice loop trail that I don't know the name in East Canyon, but other than that I've not done much biking around the Wasatch Front.
I'd also like to do a little hiking, but I think most of my hiking will be scouting for critters. I'm bow hunting for the first time this year.
Villes Caldera NM- did the trail on my cross bike, bad idea in retrospect-

Sangre De Cristo mountains, overlooking Sante Fe NM- 12,000ft (I got a headache at the top)

Have to work tonight otherwise it sounds like a great hike, exactly what I need to get back into shape. If there is a good Wed after work hike let me know, I could drive up to Heber or PC. Let me know.

I could hike instead of bike Wed after work, Bell Canyon would be a good choice and close to you if you don't mind starting at 6:30 or 7:00. I Should be back to normal by then. Today was great, now for the recovery period.

What time are you going to start on the Pfeiferhorn? I have been wanting to do that hike. Not 100% sure I'm gonna make it on the 14th but thinking about it.

Jared you should come ride your bike down old ward canyon with me this week! it's a blast, they set up a competitive downhill race course last weekend and the trail is still up, (it's easy when you do it slow)

Sounds like fun Stratton, will have to figure out when and remind me where Old Ward canyon is, (north ish from me somewhere IIRC):rof: :rof:

Sounds good, want to meet at the trailhead? I'd suggest between 8 and 9 - but earlier the better. Looks like I need to go shopping for a new daypack!

:( I'm busy until noon on Saturday or else I'd like to come. When I was a little younger some friends and I hiked up Red Pine and camped on the ridge between it and American Fork canyon. The next day we hiked over the Pfeifferhorn and made our way down Bells Canyon.

The Beatout Hike! That is a killer hike. Spent 12 hours one very long day doing that one, forgot my camera too so I might get talked in to a repeat someday but I'd seriously train for it next time.

They are nice to have for the ridgeline cornice, or for the approach to the ridgeline, or along the knife edge below the summit, but not neseccary. If you want to descend via Maybird Gulch I'd recommend one. The one place to fall and maybe hurt yourself bad by sliding out of control on this hike, the summit snow patch, but the snow usually melts off the rock rib along side the summit snow patch to the south wich is easy to scramble up, so you can normally avoid most of that anyway. I am planning on bringing mine.
Other than that, gore tex and gators will keep your feet dry, plastic bag or snow pants makes descending the ridge fast and fun work!

We had a great hike Saturday. I was not comfortable climbing the steep snow covered slopes with no ice axe or crampons and quit 100 feet below the last ridge line before the Pfeifferhorn. Jared went to the summit of that ridge but didn't make the Pfeifferhorn either. My friend Kendall joined us and even though we were beat at the end of the day we saw some great scenery, had a fun hike, and learned a bit too. Thanks Jared!

Your welcome and thanks for the good company! If you just had an iceaxe you would have been a lot more comfortable, especially on that one icy traverse, that would have been a great slope to practice self arrest techniques too! I hope I tried to encourage you enough without pushing too hard to get up that ridge! There was a lot more snow this time compared to last years pics.

I wish I had seen this before, I ended up going for a long ride through the city today.
Any plans for Saturday? Is there somewhere around that a guy can bike to a place to do some fishing? Near 100F this weekend is pretty hot, I wouldn't mind getting to some elevation.

Sorry, couldn't post that till lunch. Decided on it as I drifted to sleep last night:speepin:
Great sets of single and double track up there perfect for my first ride this season. Rode North starting the Round Valley Loop, cut off to go up Somewhere Elks, then down Nowhere Elks, up over and down Backslide, back up to 70-101 to connect back to Round Valley Loop which I rode S.E. then S. looping back towards the beginning taking the Lower of a triple option split, then back the way I started. Smooth rolling single track, fun switchbacks, enough climbing to push the heart rate up but not kill me, and nothing very technical. Tons of wildflowers this year - Flox, Paintbrush, Larkspur, and Sweet Pea to name the ones I know. I forgot my gloves and the old Point n shoots battery was dead :(
My most recent plan for this saturday just cancelled as of last night, now undecided. I'm no good on knowledge of fishing holes either.

I'm going biking this Saturday, either mountain biking or a nice road ride through the canyons. There is a 3-gun match that I wanted to attend but I just can't get excited about standing around 100F temps all day long.
If someone else is heading up let me know and I'll try to ride with you. I have an event going on untill about noon, so probably an afternoon ride.

Anyone else interested? This time I'll drive to the top and ride for an hour or two, riding to the top is a lot of work to be followed up with another ride.

No worries Stratton, I wouldn't have been able to make it. Wayne and I finished that trail well before noon three weeks ago and it was just in the nick of time from being to hot, I can only imagine what this afternoon was like. I had forgotton how rocky that trail was.

Did not leave until 8:00 AM. Reached the summit about 12 noon. Round trip miles: 16, Elevation gain: 4,850 feet, Peak elevation: 11,751 feet. Second highest peak in the Wasatch Range next to Mt Nebo which is 11,928 feet. We slid down the snow field (some people call it a glacier) from the Mt Timp ridge to Emerald Lake.
