I had wheeled my 96 XJ all day Friday up at Mingus Mountain and man it was sweet, started sleeting and snowing but anyways, came home and parked it. Noticed a better parking spot so about an hour or two later, I went out and moved it. Everything was fine. This morning I go out and it just cranks. I have fuel, but no spark. I have all power but the Check engine light does not come on with just keying the ignition nor does it at anytime. I assume that either my computer is bad or it is not getting power but I don't know where to start. I've checked the battery connections and the grounds and found no problems other than the neg cable was loose on the battery. We did have a big rain last night an I figured water ran under my hood scoop but Now it's still not working. Anyone have anythoughts? Anyone have a spare comp they could let me use to just see if it needs replacing or if it is in the connection????:worship:

Try unplugging the computer and cleaning the connection, I'd also suggest cleaning the CPS connection..

Well as an update, I replaced the CPS and nothing. I have come to the conclusion that only an orangatang can bend his arm enough times to put the top bolt in. I just picked up the new computer and viola! Nothing http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/images/smilies/confused.gif. Back to square one. Does anyone know where the auto shutdown relay is? I thought it was in the power distribution center above the pass fender next to the aux fan relay. Since they where both the same, I swapped the two and nothing.
Anyone here with a dealer or service shop connection? I am at my witts end and I don't want to throw anymore money than I need to to get it running. And I need it running fast.....

Well after much debate, the Jeep is going to Performance Dodge tomorrow. I have checked everything. If they can tell me whats wrong, then great. Maybe they can put the dang upper crankshaft position sensor bolt back in for me while they're at it.http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/images/smilies/aagh.gif I just wish I could see their faces :sure: when I tow the beast in there.http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/images/smilies/ack2.gif

did you try the no start check list?
i found it very usefull because after i did a headder swap and engine mounts, the coil wire came off the dis cap. with the aid of that list i was able to narrow it down and then pinpoint the problem.
how about some more information on your no start issue:
after cranking the engine for a short while, does your tail pipe smell like gas (if it does, your fuel system is ok)
after cranking pull a spark plug. is it wet with fuel? if so, take some compressed air or one of those cans for blow cleaning a computer and dry it out.
with key on but not cranked do you have pressure at the fuel rail? do you hear the fuel pump coming on before starting to crank?
did you pull a spark plug and ground it out and look for a spark? if so, then the power part of the equation is working properly.
you said you came into some weather. did you get into wet, muddy or snowy conditions? if so, you could have gotten a connection packed with grime or got some of the more tempermental sensors wet. maybe even a soaked or mud caked air filter (i know its a long shot but it does warrent attention)
the goal is to find out what part(s) of the fire equation is missing here- fuel, + heat (spark)+ oxygen (air)=fire (engine runns). once you figgure out what part of the equation is missing in there you can then trouble shoot that system.
for more information more elaborate steps to take and things to check, check out the link i posted above. yes, it may be a PITA to go through it mythotically, but it mahy save you from having to deal with the stealership thus saving you $ome money.

I have fuel pressure, clean air filter, electrical connections are fine, yada yada yada, The old coil tested fine, replaced it anyways, old crankshaft position sensor tested fine, replaced it too. The check engine light does NOT come on at all. even after pulling all sensors and trying to start it it will not throw a code. The computer is not turning on. Checked all fuses and relays, good battery and grounds.

I did not see if you had checked under the dis Cap. I have had them get wet under them and they won't start. Just a Crazy suggestion. I read not spark in your first thread.

It lives!!! My buddy came over to help me tow it to the dealership. I tried to start it 10 minutes before he got here. Nothing. Then, he pulls up, hooks up the tow rope and I go to put it in neutral. Look over and the check engine light comes on.http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/images/smilies/FaShizzleSmiley.jpg Turn the key and she fires right up!http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/images/smilies/aagh.gif I can't take any chances so I decided to take it to the dealer anyways with my buddy behind me. It ran rough for a few minutes but she surged once and died. I pulled over and my buddy pulled in front of me to finish the trip. As soon as he backed up the check engine light came back on and she fired up again.... So I dropped it off and wont hear back until monday but I figure she said she'd be damed if she was going to be towed by a Chevy.....http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/images/smilies/laugh2.gif Odd though, still no codes being thrown and when it died, the check engine light wouldn't come back on until he was ready to hook up again....

Got the Jeep back today. They couldn't find anything wrong with it so I'm gonna assume it was a wire. Even though I checked them all, I think. I'll start checking everything again. They said that if it happens again, they will diagnose it for free. Also, they upgraded the programming in the PCM and did some recall work. I work in Scottsdale and live in Glendale so, I got AAA with the 100 mile towing. Just in case.....http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/images/smilies/aagh.gif What pisses me off is the fact that everytime I called, the service manager said they were looking at through out the day.... I would like to pressure wash the engine to make it easier to trace things but I'm afraid it might end up http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/images/smilies/skull.gif Oh well it is what it is. Time to go smack it with my wallet again...

Try cleaning or replacing your coil. My 98 was doing the same thing to me off and on and I replace the coil and havent had it happen sense. I didnt notice if the check engine light was coming on or off though......

I can't believe how hard that is to get to. I've done it from the top and from below using 24 extensions with 16 swivel attachment. It's MURDA !

Wow, I haven't updated this in a while. Ok, so after I got the jeep back it ran for 2 days. Then same problem. Took it to Perforance Dodge:flamemad: again, this time it was not running. For two days, the tech they had working on it had "issues" and left early. I get a call from them on Tuesday saying, :oh your PCM is bad we need $505.04 for a new one. Well I need my jeep so I say ok. Well let me set up the next tid bit. On the reciept it states, "tested battery power, switched power, and both grounds at PCM, PCM failed internally". Get the jeep back WED. drive it home, and park it. Go to start it up on Friday, guess what? SAME THING:flamemad: :flamemad: So, Call AAA again, ask them if the driver has a large tire iron....... The driver is the same guy who towed it the second time. He says lets take a look. Pop the hood and in 5 minutes we know whats wrong with it all by accident. I left the ignition on when I got out of the truck to push it back so he could hook up. We were under the hood when he grabbed the positive cable and moved it around. All of a sudden the relays in the PDC start clicking. And sure as shit he got in the jeep, I moved the positive cable around and the CE light came on and it would start. While runnug I let go of the cable and it died. So $705.04 later it's a damn cable or a short in the PDC. I will speak to the Service Director on Monday and tell them that their tech said he checked the power and switched power to the PDC and it was fine, now they can fix whats wrong for free.
