I was just wondering what kind of dogs you folks have. I am gonna be getting a chocolate lab soon, I hope he enjoys my XJ as much as I do :-) Do you take your dogs out wheelin?

I got a 3 y.o. boxer mix....about 95% boxer, 5% mix and 8% stupid/A.D.D. but I love her to death....Haven't taken her on any of the places I go wheelin at, but I would like to eventually. She does love to go for rides in the Jeep's and stick her head out the window and watch the world go by.

Westie, west highland white terrier. Great dog even though I had only had big dogs in the past, shepards and dobes, this was my wifes dream dog. He's 12 now and while he still acts like a puppy I know the end is coming, we'll either get another or a scottie, I'm tending towards the scottie as they don't show the dirt so much... :D :D :D

I have a fawn Doberman Pinscher. We taker her wheelin almost everytime we go. We have to not disclose her breed at certain camp grounds because they are not allowed (some camp grounds will not allow Dobermans,German Shepherds,Rotweilers and Pit Bulls), but everyone that knows Ginger can tell you she is a great dog!

We had a standard poodle (Duke). Great dog! Little high strung when he was a pup but he turned out to be a very smart and trainable animal. He liked wheeling and camping too. Every time we went near the old rig he'd try to get into the back. Loved driving in the rain with the sides of the soft top rolled up.
Get the image of the "foo-foo" poodle out of your head. A poodle is a water retriever, or at least it was before the French screwed them up - they were originally a German breed (poodle ~= puddle).
I used to keep my dog shaved down and even all over. Much easier maintenance and not as dirty when in the bush.
I really miss that dog. He was very affectionate and would do anything for you.

1 11 month old dachsund.
He's a little crazy, and rode in lawn cher's MJ the whole carnagefest trip.
He also tried to get busy with the afformentioned Doby :) It's pretty funny to watch a doxie try and get with a Doby.

7 month old Chesapeake Bay Retriever (CiCi). A high energy breed that's finally calming down. She's a great dog who loves Jeep rides. We walk by the XJ and she just stands by the back door waiting for me to open it.

Zandi is my 6 year old yellow lab. She was a rambunctious clown until about the age of 3, but now she mainly sleeps all day. While she loves riding in cars, she doesn't much care for the jostling of wheeling so I leave her at home.

I've got three, a Weimeraner and two Jack Russels. The Jack Russels are watch dogs (they are naturally hyper anyway) and keep the rodent population down.
The Weimerainer for Hunting. He is mostly a nose dog and is used for tracking.
I also take the Jack Russels hunting and use them as flushers.
I've got all three trained as personal protection/watch dogs. Guys laugh at the Jack Russels being attack dogs. They each grab a foot or shoe and refuse to let go. Kind of like a mini Pit Bull. The Weimeranar is trained to go for the butt, thighs or crotch. They work as a team. They use the same technique for Wild Boar.
I always found that dogs are happiest when they have a job.
All three wheel with me, it's amazing how good there sea legs are. They can read the trail better than I can and start leaning before the bumps and corners.

I have a Wolf/Shepard/Husky mix and a Siberian Husky.Wife has a Leonberger/Golden Retriever. They dont go wheeling with us because when all 3 are together, away from home, they are absolute morons/ trouble makers.Individually they behave pretty well and my wolf dog goes to work with me every day but all 3 together is just asking for trouble.

chocolates tend to have more skin/health problems than yellows and blacks. Still, she is a SUPER smart dog already. Gonna make an awesome duck dog.

Puddel in German is slang for Cow flotch, I doubt that is the root of the name. :)
Pudelpointer (pronounced poodlepointer) Pudel actualy means the gist, the kernal or the core (some things don't translate well) Probably meaning, derived from the original. Forerunner (or close cousin) to many of the current larger hunting dogs in North Europe. Pudelpointers have a rep as good water dogs.
The modern wire haired hunting dog (70-90 pounds that actually looks a bit more like a Stanadard Poodle than a Pudelpointer does), is pretty much the standard hunting dog for Germany (about 80% of the Hunters use them). It came from the Standard Poodle or vice versa, they have been around since the stone age or so it's been said. I don't actually know which came first. Kind of a large hound, with an afro (sometimes shorter, sometimes longer).
I imagine the Airedale is also a close cousin. Which used to do the job, that German Shepards now largely do, as guard, scout and personal protection dogs.

A dog that doesn't stink, sounds great to me. My daughter refuses to drive my XJ, the scent of Hound is really strong in there. I've got a collection of scented mobiles, perfume dispensers and cans of odor eater spray, that the wife and daughters have left behind. Hanging from the mirrors, granny bars, on the floorboards, under the seats and rolling around the back, that don't seem to really help much.

Thanks for the correction on that. I'll have to get out the sharpie and correct the dog book I got it out of.

Have a 5 yr old Pit Bull named Lil' Man, and just got a new Border Collie/Lab pup this weekend for the wife. Named that one Kasey. The Pit is one of the best dogs I've ever had. Not sure about the pup yet, but I think she'll be okay.

13 year old Shepard/black lab mix. He ALWAYS goes with us wheeling and most everyplace else we go as well. He had ACL surgery last year so he was out of commission for a while. Being 13 it really set him back, he lost alot of strength and agility so now I have to lift him into the Wranglers. He has no problem getting into the XJ though. We will see what happens when I put the lift on it though, guess I'll have to lift him into that then also. When I get a little older, I guess the wife will have to lift both of us up.
About the dog smell in the XJ.
I suppose most folks are sickened by it. I find it familiar and comforting. Anyway, get some Covercraft (or similar) seat covers. They are easy to pull out repeatedly to machine wash and reinstall. That gets rid of most all of the dog smell. With Covercraft seat covers and Husky liners, even after 10 years of the dog in there, it still cleans up well.

Definitely too smart to ever be a police dog.:laugh3:

We have a 3 yr heeler/aussie shepard mix named Disco. Smart and a hard worker, always looking to please, and he hates other dogs that are bigger than him. He will bite if you try to get in my jeep without me in it (just the way I like it).
He has a face similar to OT's pup, but with heeler markings.

Thats my used golden retriever. found him wandering in some rich neighborhood. No one ever called so we ended up adopting him from the local GR rescue society. Its super nice to get a dog that is completely trained. Hard part is figuring out what his real name is so he responds better. so far i have decided it was something like "HEY" cause he responds the most to that.

Heres my dog, Tomba, she is a mut maybe lab, boxer mix maybe not we get a lot of different ideas from different people. So far she loves the Jeep, normally lays down in the back and falls asleep, and pops her head up when it gets too rough. She is about 4 monts old, maybe.

We dog sit for this guy all the time (my daughters pup) he loves to go for rides in the heep,
now if I could convince him to not scare the poop out of anyone he doesnt know
that goes near him, he would be a perfect wheelin' dog....

Motorcycle cop: (sternly) Do you know what the penalty is, in this state, for cruelty to animals?
Clark Griswold: No, officer, I don't.
Motorcycle cop: (hesitatingly) Well, it's probably pretty stiff!
Motorcycle Cop:
Ya know, if I wasn't in uniform, I'd split your skull with the butt of this revolver, faster than you could say "police brutality."

Yeah, the tow hook on the front is worthless I was going to take it off but it works good to hook the dog to when we stop. :)

Always had Great Danes. Not much of a "wheeling" companion, though; it's a tough thing to do on stilts. If you don't kill 'em during the first year and a half, they have a remarkable and kid friendly temperament.
