what is the inverse of f(x)=x/(x-3)
MogifiedXJ
August 26th, 2006, 14:49
Just take the first derivative of the function
rock rash
August 26th, 2006, 14:51
that doesnt give the inverse
5-90
August 26th, 2006, 14:58
f(x) = y, therefore y = x/(x-3).
Solve for x.

f(x)^-1 = 3(-x+1)

nope, or maybe there is something wrong with the data base

No - 42. Didn't you read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? It was a trilogy of five books with a short story prequel...

f(x)^-1 = 3(-x+1)
so (y)^-1 = -3x+3 ??

Pray, why?
Remind me not to show you my middle school algebra notes when I find them - I wrote a "flawed proof" (there was only one small flaw, which took me a while to bury...) that 1 = 2, and that the entire numbering system was, therefore, BS. Took my teacher about a month and a half to find the flaw...

I like logic and things that make sense, just because you can prove it on paper doesnt make it true. Math is just a bunch of made up mumbo jumbo anyways:D

if y = x/(x-3)
solve for x
y(x-3)=x
(x-3)/x = 1/y
1-3/x = 1/y
-3/x = 1/y -1
3/x = 1 - 1/y
3/x = y/y - 1/y
3/x = (y-1)/y
x/3 = y/(y-1)
x = 3y/(y-1)
Of course, I could be wrong...
thebrick
August 29th, 2006, 16:24
actually, if f(x) = x/(x-3)...if you are looking for 1/f(x)...would it be as simple as 1/x/(x-3) ---> (x-3)/x???
thebrick
August 29th, 2006, 16:28
if you plug in some numbers...
f(2) = 2/(1-3) = -1
f(4) = 4/(4-3) = 4
f(10) = 10/(10-3) = 10/7
then
f(2)^-1 = (1-3)/2 = -1
f(4)^-1 = (4-3)/4 = 1/4
f(10)^-1 = (10-3)/10 = 7/10

in the business world we always say 2+2=5...because thats how you make money, minimal inputs and maximal outputs...mathmatically it's stupid though but it's a little buzz word type thing thats used.

y = x/(x-3)
i usually switch x and y then solve for y
x = y/(y-3)
x(y-3) = y
xy-3x-y = 0
xy-y-3x = 0
y(x-1)-3x = 0
y(x-1) = 3x
y = 3x/(x-1)
That is the inverse. Hope that helped, if you have any questions about a step let me know and i'll say what i did.
