Just wanted to let you all know that I dropped my xj off at Pep Boys this morning with a note that it needed either the AC Compressor or the Idler Pulley replaced. I was leaning more towards the Idler Pulley since the AC works just fine but didn't want to go through the effort of replacing the idler pulley and have it end up being the compressor. Anyway, Pep Boys called to tell me they were impressed with my knowledge of what was wrong with my jeep.

:D

Nice to finally feel like I might actually know something about that thing I drive and nice to have a mechanic acknowledge that even though I'm a girl, I might actually know what I'm talking about. :yelclap:

Which wouldn't be a bad thing, if he was decent looking. But I think they have a minimum weight requirement for hiring at this particular Pep Boys. There wasn't a one of those mechanics that weighed less than 225 lbs.

I was thinking the same thing. I happen to enjoy being 225. :D

and yet i find that being a "small guy" seems to help out working on my heep. i find i can get into some spaces that others can not- kina like removing my front drive shaft while leaving the tnt belly pan in place.

good job on the diagnosing the problem.

Yea, now I just need to have enough confidence in myself to just do the repair myself.

Really, I don't mind "big" guys. There's just something about 3-4 very large, grease covered guys who are drooling over me at the service counter that isn't appealing. Sorry.

you should be able to do that idler pulley bracket pretty easy by yourself. Just a thought but lots of guys can help if you run into problems.

Yes, I know that I could have replaced the idler pulley myself. But because I wasn't 100% sure that the noise was coming from there, I didn't want to replace it and then have it still end up being the A/C compressor. So I took it to a mechanic for them to fix it. That's the part where I need to quite second guessing myself and just do the repair myself first.

Funny, I just went through the hell that is an AC compressor clutch bearing the last two days.

I did find out that you can replace just the bearing...however only the cheap part stores carry them. Carquest, Napa, Parts Plus, they do not. However Checker and Auto-Zone do.

It took four trips, including one to the Checker warehouse to get it but it's finally back together. BTW that stupid little bearing is 45 bucks.
