could questions about differentails

I have a 90 jeep cherokee 4l 4x4

how do i tell if my rear is a 44 or 35?

and how can i figure out what the gearing is on the front?

Auto tranny usually has 3.55, 5 speed usually has 3.07. You can open the diff and count the gear teeth or look for the stampings on the ring gear and do the math. Divide the larger number of teeth by the smaller. You can also jack the axle up and spin the tire one time by hand and count the turns of the drive shaft. 3 1/2 time around would be 3.55 gears.


D44 in the pic. D35 cover is more oval.

There should be a tag on one of the bolts on each diff. cover. the gear ratio is listed ,and/or You can call your local jeep dealer with the Vin. number , They will tell you everthing you want to to know.
