My label says 241j on the tcase label, is this just another number for a 242?? just curious, I have installed a chain and sye for a 242 without issue

241 is the TC in rubicons....4:1 ratio...shift pattern the same as a 231 though, so if you have the FT/PT 4wd settings, its just a misprint...

went had another look, I'm not crazy 241j, 2:72 ratio. I'll have to ask my jeep guy why it says that!

here is a picture of the np241j in a liberty. as you can see it isn't a 4:1. but a 272 low range

Wait, now i'm thinking.

According to my notes, NP241 were available in a lot of things. NP241 cases are supposed to be a lot stronger than NP231 cases, and directly interchangeable with NP242 cases. NP241 5,555 lb-ft torque 18,800 GVW (11,000 on NP241 HD but has provisions for PTO) vs NP231 1,885 lb-ft torque 15,925 GVW. And if they came on Libbys and if Mepco (teraflex) still makes the 4:1 lowrange kit... this could be a good thing right?

Just to be sure it's a 241j on a cherokee? Not a liberty. Outside the US liberties were called Cherokees. What year and must have pics.

good point! if it is an xj somebody swaped it on! now if it is a kj then it is probably original.

not all 241's are 4:1. the liberties (05-07) with the 6 speed manual (nsg370) had the np241j (regular low range), it is a heavier command trac case, used in dodge trucks. the rubicons had the nv241or (i believe).
TJ (and later LJ) Rubicons had the 4.0:1 NP241OR t-case, you are correct.

For the poster that pointed out the GMC and Dodge NP241, that is also correct. However, since the original poster stated it was an NP241J, that means it's ben assembled by New Process for use in a Jeep vehicle. NP241D=Dodge, and NP241C=Chevy/GMC...
