A few weeks ago I went to the local dealership to get some spray paint for my 2000 XJ. It is in the Flame Red Clear Coat, Code "PR4". When item was picked up it was the wrong color. The color was found out to be Poppy Red. With further investigation looking nation wide for this paint with no right color. Mopar came to a conclusion that the color has been misprinted and numbered wrong. Most Flame Red Clear Coat Spray cans with code PR4 is really Poppy Red. From the last I herd they are looking into how this happened and how it can be fixed. From what they told my dealership they have been getting calls about this for the last few weeks Nation Wide. There may be a few cans out there that are right, but I recommend you check first if you need this item. Just letting the word out to any 2000-2001 XJ's with this color.

I have two tubes of PR4 touchup paint and they are clearly not the same color. I understand an incosnistancy in the batch of paint but this is more a differnce Im wondering if they have the same issue with the tubes

It might be. I am not sure what else may be effected. But I still would check any paint before buying it.

Maybe other suppliers don't have the issue? I need some PR4, and after some quick googling...found these sites w/ 12oz spray cans for $22-25. They also have pens, jars, cans, etc.

Does anyone have experience with any of these? Other good places to look?
Thanks,

It IS confusing.
PPG lists 3268 PR4 as GRAPHIC RED for all Jeeps 1980-1995
YET also lists 4679 PR4 as FLAME RED for all Jeeps 1993-2006
I have the cut outs from my hood vents and now use that as a "paint chip" to use to compare colors in the lighting of the store.

I too have have problems with finding the right color to match.
My 97 "gunmetal blue" seems to be a shade lighter than any of the touch up paints I've tried. anyone know the proper color code?

The red issue is clearly a mislabeling problem. Your mismatch is probably just fading, and/or production variation.
A good body shop will always "tweak" paint to match what's on an older car...

The factory paint code should be on the sticker on your driver's door. Mine has "PNT:[code]" on the bottom line.

Mopar has solved the problem with the Flame Red Clear Coat color. They have done a recall on all cans of paint for this color. They are now producing the right color for PR4.

My XJ and my Neon R/T are both PR4, Flame Red. I had always assumed that Chrysler had just changed the name of the same color red they used over more than a decade, thus the same code. i.e. "Poppy Red" of the late 80's, early 90's, was kept, they just started calling it "Flame Red" instead, and thus the same code.
I have cans of touch up paint with code "PR4" on them, labeled as Poppy Red. Come to think of it, I don't think it has every matched perfectly, I just assumed it was faded paint compared against fresh paint. Perhaps I've been wrong and they have the reds all confused.

Poppy Red is more of a pink color. A very close color to Flame Red is the early 90's Colorado Red. Chrysler came to the conclusion that they have been mis labeling the spray paint and not even making the Flame Red color even tho they thought they were. I'm glad not it has been fixed, but continue to check first since it will been sometime to get all this paint out of circulation.

Why go to the dealer? I can go to napa with my paint code and they will mix up a rattle can from formula for $22.00cnd, the paint is a very good match.

Napa has a great selection of Dupont paint systems and can mix pretty much anything. The Napa in Brantford here in Ontario has a cool spectrophotometer that can read an unknown paint swatch and come up with a formula for most paint systems. Very cool.
Once you have a code, good colour matches really depend on whoever actually does the mixing from the paint manufacturer formula. I used to mix and spray dupont base/clear systems in a production environment so I know half a gram more or less than specified can throw some colours off. Sometimes colour codes will have alternates which are slight variations of the hue or metallic/pearl content. This can make things tricky as you generally have to visually match the proper alt swatch to your existing paint.
