I've got the plexi, I know how I'm mounting it, as far
as a frame is concerned, I just need to see some
placement others have done (read: pictures).
Thanks.

No, I mean GLASS BOTTOM XJ.
You know, where one can see through the floor, so one doesn't have to get out to see where they are hung up.
For what do I need a windshield?

I like my cloth seats just fine, thanks.
Besides, plexiglass seats would do nothing for me, if I can't even see through the floor.

Just learn how to drive...then there would be no need for see though floors.

I don't know if there's been others.
For all I know, myself, Goatman, and Brett are the only ones in NAXJA that even want to be able to see the rear driveline.
It's not a far out there idea, just an underutilized one.

http://pic.piczo.com/img/i198176755_81469.jpgI cut floor off right behind the seat's. It's great to be able to look down and see what the diff is hung on. You can see if you need to just move a little left or right or bump it. Out here no need for the plexi.

OT

I'd thought about that, but, unlike you guys, we have so many water crossings in some of the places we wheel, it would just end up a big wet mess.
Besides, I would have big port holes for water moccasins to get me.

Duh, I forgot you back halved it.:dunce:

I think I'm just going to cut out most of the rear floor (including the hump) and the storage area under where the rear seat would be.
Then, I'll frame it and lay in the plexi.

Perhaps someday, but I'm happy with it's capabilities and haven't really put much thought into re-engineering it, just yet.
1. I know what this thing will do.
2. Why screw with a setup that works?

both good points. i just know you are usually one with the sawzall, combined with that chassis you bought (and sold?), i thought maybe you had more tubage on the brain.

Will heat be an issue at all? I've been driving around with my interior pulled for a while and have been surprised with how hot the floors can get.

I have thought of adding a few "windows" to the underside, but didn't know how well it would turn out in a DD, both from heat and debris being kicked up at high speed. Any main reason you picked plexi over lexan? I have access to both, but I've heard conflicting reports on which is more durable under these conditions.

I definitely majorly considered it when I was at 115" and hit my driveshaft semi-regularly. After going to 109" and pointing the pinion way up, I haven't felt it necessary. I didn't want it to see what I was hung up on (I can usually tell that without looking) but simply to see when my driveshaft was getting too close for comfort.

It would also be very helpful to be able to see the passenger side front tire, but i don't think the sight-lines would work if you plexi'd the passenger floorboard.

I like the idea, but wouldn't there be a problem with visibilty, considering that the plexiglass will more than likely get dirty all the time? If you can install wipers also, you'd definately be the man.

Mr.OverKill
August 24th, 2006, 21:32
think star trek and Transparent Aluminum, hay, it was worth a try:)

on the serrious side, the combo of lexan or plexi and expanded sheet would proabably work well and help keep the water mocasins out but as earlier stated you are in a wet wheeling area and it might be a moot point when it gets dirty.

IslanderXJ
August 24th, 2006, 22:24
If your Xj had a rear wiper w/ the sprayer you coud relocate the sprayer to the undercarrige in some fashion that it would spray down the window. I think all it would take is some rerouting of the tube and some minor fabricaton of a bracket.
Hell who knows, this might turn out to be a great idea....

This thing got off to a bad start in my absence. Instead of simple plate, you need to be thinking flexible skylight. Point it at the offending obstacle and get an eyefull.

polycarbonate is dificult to work with. I was thinking a tube enclosure, like a belly turret, then put the plexi inside the tube, just to keep the random stray rock out.
