What are the laws in your city? Some cities say that you have to keep current tags on them. Is yours licensed?
Find out if they are doing something illegal.
OT
August 23rd, 2006, 20:36
Yeah, is it tagged?
Do you have a garage?
Got a friend with space?
Will he get in trouble if his XJ "skips bail"?
steelmen
August 23rd, 2006, 20:46
its not tagged i just bought it about june and have been working on it at my buds house but we started to drop a a new 350 in his 442 cutlass sumpreme so he kicked me out
no i dont have a garage but i have a long drive way and a big 35x35 foot slab of concrete in my back yard so im thinkin if i roll it in the back yard and they might cool off
p.s. we have a 66corvair in the back yard for the past 4years that by mom has been "trying to sell" and never had a problem with it
my back yard is fenced and my jeep needs a starter before it can jump bail
i get paid friday so im throwing my money at the jeep and get it out of there before the 9th but its kinda hard when its on jacks and half way between a axle swap

Yup, totally depends on the local laws regarding unsightly/immobile/abandoned vehicles.
The fact that the house next to yours is empty/abandoned is probably not helping things, especially if the local police get a lot of problems with meth labs/crack/rape in similar empty houses. They tend to look more closely at other empty houses and surrounding neighborhoods because of that.
DAM CITY AND POLICE !!!1 . . . . DIE DIE DIE!!!!Nice. Wanting to kill someone for doing their job? Yeah...somehow I can't picture you as being entirely in the right on this now - if you don't like the laws that the police enforce, don't blame the police. Blame yourself for not going to local government meetings to get the laws changed.

one thing you can try is a huge tarp that completely covers the vehicle down to the ground. often times if they can't see what's under the tarp, but it doesn't look to trashed, they won't do/say anything. and having plates on it would definitley help.

Actually you should probably blame a neighbor... Generally when this type of stuff happens it's a neighbor calling in.
It's happened to me - not with the Jeep yet although that's been in the driveway at my mom's for a few months so I wouldn't be surprised if I get a call.

I agree that it is not rocket science, and that the only way out is to comply with the law at this stage. This begs the question though, Isn't this supposed to be a "free" country? Exactly what sort of "free" society mandates that you cannot keep your property on your property? Making something illegal because it is unsightly is a horrible precedent to set! What if all of his neighbors decide that he is ugly, do they not then have the "right" to not have to look at such things as established by previous law?
America has turned into a hypocritical land of the "we're not really free but we like to maintain that we are, oh and we're better than you"
I am becoming more and more disappointed in my beloved USA all the time.
....unfortunately this arguement may qualify me as a tard.

No you're not wrong, there are an increasing number of 'people' who have nothing better to do than get in other peoples business. We have a couple of 'self proclaimed' residents like that, the make their DAILY rounds in the neighborhood looking for covenent violations. They are not allowed on peoples property but they carry 50x binos for detailed inspections. It almost came to blows last year when we were rebuilding my son's TJ after he rolled it. Finally a trooper friend of mine said cover it to the ground with a tarp, that worked.
We have a pristine YJ rolling frame thats going to get a body swap and it was mentioned to me by another $#%$& busybody, gonna tarp it this weekend.
I'm considering buying 300 of those pink flamingos and a 200 of those ducks with the spinning wings and putting them in the front and side yards, there are no restrictions on lawn decorations other than it can't have been a motor vehicle at any time in it's past life... :D :D :D

I can not see how a govrenment entity can TRESPASS on to PRIVATE property and tow a car, or take anything for that matter.
But times are changing, It saddens me to see our property rights being taken away a little at a time....
There are ways of 'cleaning' up a neiborhood, with out 'stealing' and 'trespassing'.

Illinois vehicle code 625ILCS 5/1-101.05 ABANDONED VEHICLE defined
....any vehicle in a state of disrepair rendering the vehicle incapable of being driven in its condition OR any vehicle that has not been moved or used for 7 consecutive days or more and is apparently deserted.
This is Illinois definition of an abandoned vehicle. Your municipal laws may differ.
No starter = incabable of being driven

You obviously are not schooled in the ways of tow truck drivers. Those dudes are very good at getting cars out of anywhere. Axles or not.

When Dad first started working at the EJ&E offices in Joliet he heard a story that the casino owners were having problems with their property being "tagged" before the casinos had a chance to open their doors along with other gang related problems and the Joliet police weren't doing anything about that. The casino owners went to a city counil meeting one night and explained the problems they were having and that if the City of Joliet and the Joliet PD didn't do something about this situation they were going to bring in their own people to "fix it" and that the city wouldn't like their methods of taking care of the problems. Joliet fixed the problem...........
I have to admit I do have a problem with hauling off a vehicle that is at it's registered address, expired tags or not. About 6 months after I killed the motor in my Shadow (I'll admit it, I was being a retard when I did it), city of West Chicago sent a We-Go police cadet to get a look at my plates. He walked up the drive and was caughtby my sister who was working in the back yard. Not only was the Shadow there, but my sister had her Briarwoody parked behind it and and mom's full size Chevy G-Van was parked next to me pretty much blocking it from view plus both trucks had the windows rolled down and she had her cd player going. When Nick caught him he told her he didn't think anybody was home and that there was an issue with a white car and wanted to make sure mine wasn't the car they were looking for, but ran my plates as well as my sister's since her truck was also white. Dad about had a fit and told her (and me, and mom) that the kid should have been told to take a hike since he was tresspassing and not allowed him to look at the plates of either vehicle. Mom later called the PD and talked to someone she knew about what happened and she told mom the same thing happened with one of her youngest kid's car, they were hastling her because his car just sat. Reason he wasn't driving it is because he was is the military at the time away from home (I don't remember for sure, but he could have even been in Iraq at that point!)

If it is in a Fence in Backyard you should be ok. The thing is alot of places are not wanting cars setting outside in the front yard with out plates and being worked on. They Said it lowers the price of houses in the area. So there are laws that said they can tow your car if it is in plain site. So if it was in a Garage or in a Fence in backyard they can not tow it. You will want to check with local law to be sure though.

That only partains to something on the right-of-way, of on public property.

Some of those laws are rediculous. 7-days.....my vehicles are all abandoned now, and will be until I return to the country. There are cruises longer than that for FSM sake! Talk about a shocker, you come home from a cruise, report your vehicle stolen and they say, "no we towed it, you owe us the following fees and towing charges to get it back."
If that ever happened to me you could be damned sure I would be "removing an eyesore" from some councilmans yard! I am a law abiding citizen and do my best to be a responsible citizen, but the day the law crosses that line, so do I.

dig a deep hole and put in a BIG chunk of concrete with a 6" or so steel tube sticking up a few feet, weld a 10 ton d ring to it, and fill the tube with concrete.
chain the xj to the post.

I would guess the wrecker driver would see that as a challenge. Good way to come home and find the back half of your XJ still chained to the poll. And then have to pay the fees to get the other half out of impound :).

Parking laws suck... I park my XJ outside of my house between my house and the neighbours. My parents won't let me park it on the drive way since it leaks... Anyway, I've parked it there the whole time I've had it, so almost 6 months, and no one has complained. I'm surprised because my neighbours right next door have their mother in law come up every few weeks and they've had complaints about her parking her F150 between my house and theirs for only a few days, but my XJ is there 24-7.
I know it's against the covenants to park my Jeep where it is, and technically where I park it is my neighbours lot. Anyway, not really the same deal seeing as mine is registered, but I think that's lame...

As long as your tags are current, and it is parked on your property, the city shouldn't be able to do anything.
