I'm still trying to figure out this noise in the front end...and I finally took the front differential apart to see how it looks.

What year is that from? It looks like a low pinion D30.

How did the oil look when you drained it? When my bearings went out on my stock D35 rear, the oil had a nice pearlescent sheen due to the little particles of bearing metal in it.
 
Good eye, do you mean up at the top in the shadow? Looks like a possible chipped tooth or two.
 
Have you checked your front shaft u joints? Unhook the front shaft from the axle, bungee it up and go drive. If you have no noise thats your problem.

It looks like there might be a chip in a couple of the ring gear teeth, that might just be the light though.

You also might want to consider a diff cover and some gear oil, I've heard they work better that way :)
