View Full Version : Detours Tailbone update

I am one of several NAXJA members eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Tailbone setup. Mark emailed me today and said that he is slammed right now following the move of his shop but he expects it to slow down over the next month or so. He will then continue development of the Tailbone tire carrier which he projects should be ready for order by early to mid summer.

I'm just passing along some info, I have no affiliation with Detours so I don't have any insight as to exact dates. However, I would think June would be early summer and late July would be mid summer.

Ok I spoke with Mark today. I ordered a rough cut slim line bumper with tire carrier. Anyway we were on the phone quite a while so I figured I wasn't keeping him from stuff.

I asked him about the "Tailbone". He said that the Jeep pictured in the post above has been using the tailbone system for about a year now. On the trail quite a bit. Everything is working well, however he said due to his move he has been busy with other stuff, but still working on the tailbone system in his free time, mostly thinking about it. He is thinking of doing a small mod to it to dampen the possibility of lateral movement. He says the slimline is very good in this area and he wants to make the tailbone better.

Ok I asked him if I should pass this along because I thought it might cause undo panic, but he just laughed.

He's moving! Another house and another shop. The good news is instead of being 800 miles away, it's only 8 miles away. He says the tailbone won't be off the ground until he's in the new shop.

Just in case you have a pending order with him, not to worry, he doesn't think the move will do anything to the time line for your goodies(s).

What a great guy and a wealth of knowledge. He was willing to answer any question I had and wasn't in a hurry to get off the phone. I wish I could find a doctor like that!!!

So the "Tailbone" is coming, well, soon.

Thanks for the update.

I got rear ended about a month ago. It was a slight bump, strangly enough by a same year Grand Cherokee. First time being hit, pretty good jolt, just messed up some of the paint on the back bumper.

Even though I really like the idea "AND PRICE" of the tailbone, I'm going for beefy.

That's my XJ with the Tailbone. It's been holding up very well with a good amount of trail time. Had a few pulls on the d-rings and again, no problems.

I had to break it down and reassemble it when I installed the DPG gas skid. Once I got the order of operations straight, the Tailbone, Hidden hitch and gas skid all tied in together nicely.

Really a brilliant design by Detour.

Do you have to swing the carrier 180 degrees before you can open the back hatch?

We should start a list of who's willing to buy now... :)

I'll go first. Heck, I'll buy a prototype to test. :)

Is Detours willing to do a group buy? I may be in for that as well if the price is reasonable.

I really want one. Is the tire angled forward at all? The tire mounts that have the tire very close to the body of the car look the best to me. I hope this comes out soon.

Here is a recent e-mail when I asked DetoursUSA about tilting the spare tire carrier so it would match the pitch of the back hatch.

Tony-

I can 'pitch the carrier for you, no problem......no one has ever asked before.

Super nice guy and willing to do anything that won't screw something up, or get you hurt. Great customer service.

The tailbone will be as notorious as the 29 spline 8.25 Aussie Locker. It will come out eventually but those of us who were interested will have bought other products by then.

So maybe he could build some with the imporoved dampening for those of us who want it now, to "test it out"...

I very much want to test it...

Might have to call him and ask about it....

That's awesome. If I sell my mustang here soon, I'll be buying his slimline bumper and I'd love to have the tire tilted in a bit.

I bet Mark will think something is in the water, since I was the first one to ever ask about having the carrier tilted. lol

Nope. Probably about 100 deg or so to clear corner of the tail gate to the edge of the 33.

What happens when you come off a rock and hit the rear corner of the bumper?

then it gets smashed just like the stock bumper always does... but it "looks cosmetically better" before you smash it... :laugh2:

Gotcha. What would be cool is a bumper, made out of 1/4 plate that the stock caps and that tire rack could bolt to.

I kind of like the stock look but need something stronger.

fosforito_one
August 17th, 2008, 10:49
that is one thing I would worry about with this system. I think it is a great idea if you aren't going to ever wheel in places where you might mangle the stock ends.

E-mail detoursusa and ask them.

Other than being behind on existing orders (they moved the shop twice this year) they should be ready to start making them. I think they just need a push, or a few pushes.

I inquired and this is the email I received:

Mike,

Sorry for the delay, I was called away for the last few days.

TailBone pricing is $385.00 plus shipping.

Feel free to call for shipping qoutes or email me back.

The TailBone webpage will be delayed aprox. 2 weeks, I have no control
over updates, but the install is straight forward, I currently dont have
pic's available but instructions would be supplied.

Lead time is currently about 3 weeks, orders have already been processed,
January has turned out to be a busy month.

Thankyou for your intrest,

Mark
Detours

I'm going to order this week if the budget allows, otherwise on the 15th :)
