Ok, I'm kinda frustrated. I don't know what changed or why it changed, but for some reason, my computer quit automatically opening/playing certain video/audio files and a pop-up window keeps appearing asking if I want to save the file. The file will play once I save it to my temp files, but I've never had to save the file first, just simply let it open automatically.

It seems that the only file extensions it's not auto-playing are .wav and .mpg files....... the most common kind.

I can't figure out where to check the settings or if that's even where I should be looking to fix this.

I'm running Windows Vista, and my default media player is Windows Media Player.

Any suggestions?

Tools/Options, look for a tab called File Types.

You might also have to fix the MIME associations in your browser as well. After fixing Media Player, does the pop-up still come up? And does it have a check box for "always use this program" or something along those lines?

Well, Vista must be a bit different. Opening the Tools tab, then selecting Options gives me a window with Security, Privacy, Content, Connections, Programs and Advanced tabs......... none of which have a File Types tab or anything similar.

Probably. I should have a Vista laptop by the end of next week, I'll take a quick gander then.

Okay, so I lied, got my laptop late last week.

This is right from Windows Help and Support:
Change the program that opens a type of file

If you double-click a file in Windows and it opens in the wrong software program, follow these steps to choose the program you would prefer that file use. You can change this setting for an individual file, or you can tell Windows to open all files of that same type in the software program you choose.

Open the folder that contains the file you want to change.

Right-click the file that you want to change, and then, depending on the type of file, either click Open With or point to Open With and then click Choose Default Program.

Click the program that you want to use to open this file.

Do one of the following:

If you want all files of that type to open in the same software program, select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.

If you want only that file to open in the software program this one time, clear the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.
