Transmission Swap Idears

I just picked up a 93 ZJ for 300 bucks. The tranny is fawked and shoots ATF everywhere when running.

I've heard that the ZJ trannys are horrible from the get-go. This thing has been rebuilt twice now.

I've read up on Ford guys swapping trannys from full size trucks into their Rangers etc.


Is there a "common" swap to the 4.0L?

I've checked advanced adaptors, but i'm still left in the dark.

Help?

if your zj has the 4.0, maybe you can drop an AX-15 in it. there were a few made like that. That would be sweet.

The xj AW4 tranny would be a good choice.Its bullet proof.

AW4's and AX15's are solid transmission that bolt up to the 4.0 and the crappy transfer case in the ZJ's (its usually a NP249). I would swap out the transfer case while you're at it. AX15's can be difficult because I'm pretty sure the shifter ends up coming through the floor under the center of the dash.
