Anyone know of a good shop that would do a quality/cheap job on swapping in an AX-15 or preferably a NV3550 in my jeep instead of the AW4 that's currently in there? It's a 98 4.0 with the 231 t-case. Looking for something in the Springfield, MA area. Any estimates as far as what something like this would run me?

well finding all your parts you need for it is a little tricky...

I remember seeing a writeup on it somewhere, but I think it was for an AX-15. I figured if I find one at a junkyard off one of the vehicles it comes off, take all the parts and buy replacements for certain things at auto zone I shouldn't be out too bad. I figure there have got to be people out there that want to swap out there manual for an auto (which I'm up for trading).

You are going to need an ECU.

You are going to need an ECU.Do I have to? Is it along the lines of an NSS issue? Maybe different fuel/timing curves?

Anyone have a guess as to how much this would cost?

your ECU controls the trany and that dictates idles speed and shift points and such..

as far as cost?? at Full Tilt Fabrication we'd charge an hourly rate. the trany swap wouldnt be a big deal but the retro-fitting will be a beotch... specifically the pedal assembly swap.. ball park i'd say 10+ hours...

sent ya a pm. I thought that the aw4 was unique in the fact that it has its own transmission control unit. Idk the specifics but I'd assume that it figures out which gear to be by inputs from the ecu such as engine speed, vacuum?, and some other variables (all of which wouldnt change if it was auto or manual).

newer AW4s are controlled by the OBD-II.
