Pancake compressors can be had for $150 and will work well for small jobs. Best for nailers.

Small upright/laydown compressors are good middle of the road compressors but may struggle with some air tools. They'll work for removing lug nuts and doing basic vehicle work. They'll run quite often just running the impact for all 4 tires. You may even have to wait a minute to let it build up pressure. As the pressure goes down, so does your impacts ability to remove lug nuts. Same goes for tubing bending with air/hydro. When the compressor is full, you'll bend at full speed. As it starts to wear down, the bender will use more than the compressor can build up and your bending speed will decrease. You can find these at your local hardware store for $250 - $400 usually. They will have enough umph to blow out your sprinker system

If you intend on using it for something that's air intensive like an air drill, air grinder, DA sander, plasma cutter, or tubing bender you'll want to get one of the larger bolt to the floor style compressors (typically 220V single phase). These can be had for $450 and up and, even the local Home Depot version will work well for you for quite some time. You may want to steer clear of the maintenance free ones as you cannot change the oil and do basic maintenance on them to increase their life. The downside to these machines as they typically don't come with any plumbing and you'll need to put together some form of manifold to hook your hoses to.

Any way you go it's a good idea to get some form of moisture removing gizmo for your setup. Clean dry air is far better for your tools than what comes out of the compressor. Cheap ones can be had for $50 or so.
