im a huge fan of Iron Maiden, have all original cds, lps, whatever is available out there, shirts etc...
recently i came across:
"The Tribute to the beast" which is a tribute compilation,... parts one and two... and it really sounds amazing, some of the covers/songs there i like better than originals.... but they are waaay heavier than originals... .. btw, just in my own opinion... for example "Fear of the Dark"
any other members that listen to that shi*? just wondering if these compilations are the only ones......?

I've been meaning to buy some Iron Maiden albums. I haven't heard too many of their songs, but I've liked what I've heard. "Flight of Icarus" is my favorite so far.

I saw them live a few times in the eighties. Great shows and great music. Twisted Sister was a better live show though...

Mambeau: look for one called "rhyme of the ancient mariner", you will REALLY like it;)))
and for all of you that like Iron Maiden, look for Tribute to the Beast cds, i have it, and if you want to talk about it ( :) ) pm me:)
As for shows, it reatly depends, i went to Sisters of Mercy few months ago, and it was just ok, untill they hit their major hits you couln't really tell difference between songs. The acoustic side of the show SUCKED big time. But on the other hand my buddy who has smoked a joint the width of my thumb, and the lenght of my di*k-and he stood the whole show by the main speaker by the stage, he said they rocked, but he doesnt really remember anything.......
I also went to Billy Idol not so recently, and his music is way better live than on cds, he is a cool dude... his last album kicks ass once you listen to it few times...

Mambeu if you are going to buy any Maiden there are three must haves to get you into it
1) Number of the beast , hands down their most recognized and arguably best album
2) Peice of Mind (has flight of icurus, and The Trooper which is widely considered one of thier absolute best songs)
3) Brave new world this came out in like 2001? i think, and shows some of thier new stuff. its actually my favorite maiden album even over all the old ones.
if you get those 3 they will keep you occupied for at least a month in heavy rotation. maiden is almost cult like you have to get into it and really start exploring it

It's on the Powerslave album. It's taken from the classic written by Coleridge, Samuel Taylor, 1772-1834..
I saw Iron Maiden in the 80's as well. The last concert I saw was Motley Crue. Before that I got to see godsmack and Metallica, center stage front row, seats 1 & 2. Robert Trujillo reached down and gave my wife his pick.

Robert Trujillo reached down and gave my wife his pick.
thats tight.
we were dead center dead front for every major act at ozzfest, as in 4 feet away, entire place is going insane for mudvayne.
my friend who thinks they blow hard, is the only person not rocking out. just standing there while everyone else is moshing up and down all around
lead singer from mudvayne (while screaming) gets on his knees and puts the bird right in my friends face. friend stood there unfazed and flipped him right back off, ill never forget it

I grew up on them and still break out Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind (my favorite) and Somewhere in Time. got all but the Blaze and Di'Anno recordings.
I tend to shy away from metal comps/tributes (except for my Industrial Tribute to Judas Priest :) ) however now that I listen to much more aggresive metal, I may take a look at this one you speak of. I think that Sabbath tribute Nativety in Black turned me off of tributes for years.

My first concert was Maiden on their Powerslave tour '85.Twisted Sister was supposed to open but something happened and they were'nt able to open.Maiden played for 4 1/2 hours- it was simply awesome. They even played Phantom of The Opera (first time this song was ever played in concert in the U.S.).

I love Metal, but stay away from the Satanic stuff. I want to branch out from Metallica and Megadeth, and Pantera, but don't want to get into any Satanic stuff like Slayer. How would you rate Iron Maiden? I know Metal bands are black and all, but some just use it for shock value when others are serious about being Sadistic like While Zombie, Marilyn Manson etc. Dave Mustaine of Megadeth says he is a born again Christian and will not tour with Sadistic groups, he has really been more anti-government U.S. govt with UFOs, aliens, hidden agendas, etc. He sure has a lot to talk about lately after 9/11, lots of conspiracy truths and lies floating around.
Sorry to get in with these general questions to you hard core Maiden fans (it seems this thread has wound down a bit), but I'd like to expand my music a bit. I'm going to the Gigantour Megadeth show tomorrow, Fri 8th in Oakland, lots of bands I never heard about, should be interesting. :D

I'm going to Gigantour tonight. Anyone besides Megadeth that is any good out of these bands:
Lamb of God
Opeth
Arch Enemy
Over Kill
Into Eternity
Sanctity
The Smash Up
I've heard of Over Kill and I think that's about it. I really just listen to Metallica, Megadeth, and Pantera.
I'll have to listen to some Maiden this weekend. How's the new album? Are they still as hardcore as ever? Megadeth is, they had a slight poppy album called "Risk" which is actually pretty good, just not as hard and loud as they are known for.

Opeth is my favorite metal band to come along in the past 10 years. I would go to that tour to see just them. Musicians are unbelieveable (pay attention to the drummer) and vocally Akerfeldt cannot be matched. he can't. Though you will get your death metal type vocal screaming he will on the drop of a dime break out into the most beautiful voice you have ever heard. Usually all in the same song. His range is outstanding.

Thanks so much for the feedback on the bands on Gigantour. I saw Gigantour last summer when they came to Sacramento, I cannot recall the bands, but it was good and Megadeth was awesome. I went to see just them and saw some other good bands as well.
I'll leave work early to make sure I see all the bands today, especially Opeth. I'm driving 80 miles to Oakland to see the concert today from Sacramento.
Here is a link to the tour dates/band lineup etc.
http://www.gigantour.com/home.php
I see they will be in Chicago later on in Sept., other places as well. It will be worth it to go see that concert especially if you don't have to take a lot of time off work and can tour Chicago a bit as well. The tour comes to the Congree Theatre on 9/22 in Chicago (my home town, well at least the burbs that is).
Any feedback on the other bands?
Any like Maiden, or are they so different sounding. I'm not down playing them, just seriously asking. I hear their vocal style is quite melodic.
I've really got into System of the Down and love how the singer goes all opera and then crazy death yelling the next on some of their songs. They are so crazy! :laugh3:

Any feedback on the other bands?
I have a Lamb of God release and I saw them live last year. they seem to be in the forefront of this new metal age, they drew the biggest crowd reaction by far the last time I saw them at a festival show (makes sense since they headlined it). They are worth checking out. Just be aware, they will make Maiden and bands like System of a Down sound top 40 (as will Opeth). This is by NO means a slap on Maiden, SOAD it is just a different form of metal.
I never got into Overkill however a buddy of mine is a massive fan. They have been around for YEARS (probably at least a dozen releases) so they should have a pretty good/refined set. I can't comment on the others.
Report back after the show. I'll be interested in your reaction.

Do any of you guys have a chart of the top Metal bands? I know this is very subjective and Metallica will be #1, AC/DC, Ozzie/Black Sabbath be up at the top. Do you guys consider a band sucessful without hitting the big time and selling multi Platinum? I really like Megadeth and Countdown to Extinction and Metallica's Black album hit me straight between the eyes and I'm like wow, they are good. Now I know why all those hypies as school where those black band shirts! :)
Where would you say Megadeth and Maiden rate with Metallica and Ozzie? I know I really don't care if some snobby critic doesn't like the band I do, but I'm curious if there is a rating chart etc. I know some bands love to stay somewhat underground and resist "Selling Out".
My friend who came with me to the Gigantour last summer in Sac is a huge Dream Theatre fan and I enjoyed them as I did Static X (I think they were called). I have to take some notes, otherwise I'll mix the bands up. I got some ear plugs and plan to be in the 1st few rows. None of these bands do weird stuff to the crowd like Ozzie taking the head off the bat etc?

Are you kidding? Disconnect from the mainstream media and just dig into what you want to listen to regardless of charts. Go to Borders and pick up a MetalHammer or Terrorizer and they usually have a cd or dvd attached to check out bands etc.
Here are my faves--Nevermore, Dimmu Borguir, Cradle of Filth, Behemoth, Slayer, Hatebreed, Soilwork, InFlames, Dark Tranquillity, Katatonia, Anathema, Acherkocke, Amorphis, Lacuna Coil, Strapping Young Lad, DragonForce, Between the Buried and Me, Nightwish, Within Temptation...so many...
Good luck on your findings.

Metallica, Megadeth, Smashing Pumpkins, STP, Nickelback, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, POD, Papa Roach, Sublime, Bob Marley, Hendrix, grunge/Seattle scene (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, etc).

Billy Corgan whether you like him or not is a very talented musician and song writer not just in the volume the Pumpkins have put out, but also in the diversity of their music from heavy to mellow, and his helping of other bands with their stuff. He is a muscical icon and I hope the rumors of the Pumpkins reuniting is true, I will definately go to see them.
On the Gigantour concert:
It was very good, I missed the 4 small bands in the beginning, but saw and liked Over Kill, then Opeth came on and were awesome. Indy, you were right the singer's range is amazing. I like how they can get heavy with the primal grunt singing and the crowd goes wild, to then singing very melodic and backing it up with good guitar playing. I'll definately check them out now that I've seen them in person.
Lamb of God was just pure energy, but I didn't understand a word the singer said, it was all in the deep primal grunt style, even when he introduced the names of the songs, I'm like come on this isn't WWF dude!!!!! ;)
I liked their energy, but walked out a bit, because I had the distinct feeling they are pretty Satanic. Their name also has an upside down cross in it and don't know if they mean they are sacrificing the Lamb of God to Satan or something. The lead singer is the shaven headed skinny kid with 3 hard core long heared, unshaven guitarist going absolutely nuts for for like 1-1/2 hrs. I really don't like music I cannot come close to hearing what the singer is saying, it's just down right annoying. Kurt Cobain did this on occasion, but you could understand his stuff, this primal grunt singing is good for moshing no doubt, but that's about it. Not my thing. I did like Opeth because the singer would back it up with good melodic singing and was just plain funny. He was like, "Sorry I'm such a Pu$$.., but this song isn't that hard....his Swedish acent was also cool.
Over Kill was good and the singer had amazing energy as well. I saw about 1/2 their stuff, I really wish I got to the concert sooner and saw the earlier bands, but I'm happy I caught Over Kill, Opeth, a little of Lamb of God, and obviously Megadeth. I drove almost 4 hours total (200 or so miles from Sacramento) and felt it was worth it. Parking was $20 which is a huge ripe off, but what can you do.
Thanks again guys for the heads up on Opeth, they are really good. Now if only I could see System of a Down live as well as Metallica, right when I get into them they are taking a few years hiadus (SOAD). :dunno: They did come out with 2 great albums in under a year and then who knows. Reminds me a Metallica after the Black album and Sublime (putting out their breakthrough album, but Brad died and they cannot do live shows etc).

Can't speak for the lyrics however they changed their name to Lamb of God from Burn the Priest. They are pure energy but yeah, can't understand a lick of what they are singing. That of course could be a good thing.

Pumpkins are my favorite band. I sure wish I saw them before they hit the big time in Chicago. I lived in Santa Rosa, CA and was moving back to Chicago and just missed their farewell show at the Double Door, I heard it was like a 4 hour set they put and they were totally spent at the end of the show.
