i just found a cherokee Dana44 in a local junkyard today and pulled it for $150. i got home and started cleaning the tag to see what it had, and it has 3.54 gears. but i was curious. i've never really worried about the other numbers on the tag, but what do they really mean.

this is what it says on the tag

8953005003
3.54 46-13

any ideas??? i searched on google for quite a while, but couldn't find any sites explaining or decoding diff tags. i know the 3.54 is the gear ratio, but what about the other numbers???

46-13 would seem to be the number of teeth on the ring and pinion (46/13 = 3.538). I'm guessing the top number is a serial number of some sort.

46 - 13 = teeth on ring and pinion to give ratio of 3.538:1?

interesting. didn't even think about that duh...LOL

thanks. i kinda figured the top looked like a serial number since it was so long, but thought i'd ask.

The D44s only came with (3.07 in '87) or 3.55 in XJs from the factory. MJs could have 3.73, but only with 4 cyl 5 speed.

I checked my FSM and that is indeed the case.

the first number is the part number for the assembly if even available. a year or 2 later, chrysler dropped the first 2 numbers, so the new number would be 5300 5003
