Johnny, If you can't find anyone to give you a hand. Give Joey a call up at the shop, the number is in my sig, he might be able to cut you a deal.

If you are willing to tackle them yourself, I will walk you through it via phone and e-mail. Contrary to what a lot of people think, it is NOT a hard job, it just takes a bit of patience to be precise on your specs. If you want to do this, PM me and I'll send you a list of tools you will need and where to find them cheap. Once you have those, I will walk you through. After you do gears once, you will be amazed more people don't do them. IMHO, it's way easier than dealing with an engine and WAAAAY easier than doing electrical (I suck at electrical).

If you don't want to go this way, make sure you ask the right questions when choosing a shop. There are a lot of mechanics that do gears the old school way by "feeling" the pinion rotating torque. just re-using the old shims (or just relying on the same size shims) and just "feeling" the backlash. Even the City Mechanic at the City where I work does them this way. There is no way I would ever let anyone who doesn't do them right work on them.

Good Luck!

I just saw the "grand" part. Is that including the gears or is that just labor? Even if you paid retail for all of the tools, you could buy them for around $400. I bought all of mine for $250. Parts should only be around $440. This is why I started doing gears...4-Wheel Parts quoted me $800 labor and $500 parts. Did the whole job including tools for under $700 and have done most of my friends' rigs since. That is just crazy expensive.

I have a bud who has done them before and has the tools. I'll be tackling the job myself this time (new D30) with his supervision.

I'm assuming you want this done for your trip west. I dont think i can get it done for you before then honestly.

I have a long list this summer, with some schooling on welding and fab work etc. If i had a few gear setups and my own tools in place i wouldnt hesitate to hook you up.

Have you tried Jack at No Excuses (New Egypt,NJ) .. i'v used him for years and he's very reasonable. Tell him i sent ya.
