4x4 feels like it won't disengage

A guy at work just got a 2000 auto with an NP231. He says when he makes turns it feels like the 4x4 is on and binding up and then part way through the turn there is a loud pop and it's in 2wd again. The shifter is obviously in 2wd when this happens. Any thoughts? Can the transfer case shifter be worn and letting it fall into 4x4 even if the shifter is in 2wd? Vacuum switch for the axle maybe?

I dont think there is a vaccum on a 2000, when he switches from 4 to 2wd does he let it coast for a few feet in neutral to let it unhook?

He doesn't use 4wd at all, it happens all the time just driving in 2wd.

Four wheel drive shifter adjustment...


Also check motor mounts and tranny mount.
Drivers side always fails.
