View Full Version : Disabling the speed limiter?

Has anyone done this? How hard would it be to do? I probably wouldn't be above 116 very often, but it's more of a why not? thing.

Not safe, you probably wouldn't be able to get much higher due to the XJ having the aerodynamic properties of a toaster.

This is very true. I just think it would be a fun project.

I have a switch that cuts the VSS out so I can go above the governor. I haven't had a chance to test it out, since I installed it last week. I also have the 125mph speedo in there. My test will be to take it up to the governor(116), flip the switch, lose the speedo, watch rpms climb till they stop, take note, flip switch, take note of where the needle is on the 125mph speedo as the governor kicks in again. I know mine's got at least 130 in her. My 96xj is a 2dr, 2wd, with the ax15. She's 1-2" lower on Springworks(CA) coils and leafs(ves?), Bilsteins, Addcos, and sticky 255/60/15 Yokos. Not that I do it much, but I have dogged some vehicles (civics, integras, gtis, accords, etc) only to have them slowly pass me at 120/5mph and it is annoying, so I've done what I could. Now if I got really fancy, I could locate the VSS input to the PCM and switch it there and still have the speedo reading. I don't have the wiring diagram of the PCM harness for my 96(might have to compare with the 97). Anyhow I'll try to get a video of the above sometime next week and post it in the "Fastest XJ" thread.

Where's the PCM and where's the VSS? I'll figure it out, haha.

On mine the VSS is the white wire w/ orange stripe and it comes up with two other wires(orange, black w/ blue stripe?) and is at the connector by the back of the valve cover, passenger side. The PCM(computer) is by the airbox on the inside fender. There are three harnesses for our obd2s and one of them might have the white wire w/ orange stripe assuming it stayed the same after the splice on the driver's side firewall inside the loom.

The point is more like, why? When are you ever going to be able to go that fast without me calling you a retard? ;) But seriously tho, going that fast on a public road, especially to try and show off at a Honda, is retarded.

When I saw the title of this thread I had figured it was more of a drag strip mod, not worth it to show off to a ricer. Because street racing one of them means that you are no better than they are.
Just wait til you see him in a parking lot and put one tire up on his "sweet carbon fiber hood." Just make sure nobody sees you doing that.

The export XJ's to Germany don't seem to have a limiter in them, I've gone a few MPH over 125 with both of mine (88 and 96).
Having said that, above about 115 MPH the front gets really light and the steering goes away. A little gust of wind at the wrong time could be catastrophic.
The autobahns here have no speed limits in places, but let common sense prevail. My tires are also rated to 120 MPH.

dont listen to the naysayers, just make sure you can control it at that speed. Gradon has the suspension setup to be comfortable going that fast, do you?

If anything goes wrong at that speed in a Jeep Cherokee you are dead, do not pass go, do not collect $200, dead. Assuming that you aren't ejected or killed by an object inside the vehicle you will either be crushed by the dash, impaled by the steering wheel or decapitated when the roof collapses or completely tears off. The restraint system is not that great and the vehicle is made to collapse into itself to absorb the impact, but it is only designed to do that safely up until about 70MPH give or take, after that, it crumples and crushes your ass....

I will be visiting drag strips and dyno testing before and after stroker install.

I've buried a lot of friends and acquaintances who thought they had it under control. Confidence will get you killed almost as fast excessive risk taking.
For a couple of decades I drove my bike above 150 MPH daily, you get used to it. I guess surviving till retirement and the number of miles traveled above 100 MPH qualifies me is a success, if not an expert.
XJ does just fine at 85-90 with occasional spurts over a hundred. A 110-115 is pushing th envelope some.
About the only thing you can do to make it any better is lower it (shorter tires and shorter springs). The body is a brick and really doesn't lend itself to any sort of positive down force. Side winds push it rather noticeably. I doubt the bearings were designed for prolonged speeds and will likely prematurely fail.
Most US tires are only rated to 85 MPH. Over the years I've seen a bunch of people over drive there tires and shed the tread.
But heck I'm a realist, people are gonna do what people are gonna do, you can tell them, but you can't make them listen.
I had a pickup I'd drive daily at 125-130 in spurts: It was sprung and set up to do it. Until I noticed one day that the windshields was bowing a good half inch or more. Even after coating both sides of the windshield with ballistic foil, I kept it down to 115 or so.
I enjoy driving fast, but I'm not suicidal.

Me too.

Suicidal driving is best left to the owners of crotch rockets...

No matter how good you think you are or your vehicle is set up, there's also other people on the road. I've had enough run ins/close calls with people on the highway at legal speeds to know its best to avoid those same people while at extra legal speeds...

So last night I verified that the VSS cut out switch I put in does work and does allow the xj to exceed the governor(IIRC, it was cutting on @ 3800 and I took it up to 4200 with the switch off). Some of you already knew this was possible as you've had your VSS disco'd and experienced the governor not kicking in. I'm gonna get a video of it sometime in the future.

Oh no...somehow I envision a ricer in a previous life...:D j/k I'm all for speed and Cherokees, I just have always laughed at the guys trying to video tape their speedometers while also trying to race/shift. :D

My brother will be doing that in the passenger seat. No "Look Ma, no hands" at those speeds and no taking eyes off the road, lol.

I agree. Off road and wheeling is where XJs shine, not trying to reach mach speed. If you want to do that just get a Porsche ;)

i dont know about that my toaster is pretty aero dynamic compaired to the XJ. im gunna say the xj is more like a stove.:gee:
