IS IT ANY BIG DEAL TO CHANGE OUT THE INPUT SHAFT ON A NP231? i HAVE NEVER BEEN INSIDE-NEVER REALLY WANTED TO GO THERE.

it's easier to change the input shaft than a u-joint...just more intimidating
make sure you get the oil pickup right when reasssembling.

One thing people tend to ignore is that at one point (in 95 I think) they changed the way they cut the gear.
The input shaft works with the low range annulus gear in the case. Their teeth have to be compatible.
The problem is that if they are not, it will still fit and it will be a source of never ending problems.
You might want to check in to this before you start.
