Do I need to tear into the inside of the door panel to replace a door check strap? Any tips or tricks? pics? 1989 with manual door lock and windows.

Thanks

Only thing you will have to do is remove the door panel and the plastic liner if you have one and then you can unbolt it and reach in and pull it out.

Only tip I can add is loosen the bolts first to relieve the tension, then remove the center pin. Otherwise, it's tough to get the pin in and out.

You are better off cutting a hole in the plastic liner and then using duct tape to seal it again. I've never had much luck trying to remove the plastic liner, no matter how careful I am it stretches and tears before the glue comes loose.

Thank you all. Good tips.

I can relate, not on the Jeep, but on any car that I've had to do this.

I have a sharp, thin putty knife that I use to pull the plastic away. I just slip it under a corner and weasel it around the edge until it comes loose. That said, the glue on my '92 might be pretty weak with age!

Don't count on it - I replaced a couple doors on my '92 last winter - those plastic liners were on there but good (had to get through them to get to the harnessing for power windows and locks) on not only my doors, but the replacement doors (off a '91) as well.

Definitely use the cut-and-tape method - after all, who's gonna see it under the trim panel?
