You can pull the wj knuckles and brakes for a cross over steering set-up off of the front axle...

Not if it's a ZJ. :)
Does it have rear discs?

Bigger brake booster is nice too. My '87 Comanche is getting one from a '93 ZJ along with the bigger front brakes.

If it's a V8 ZJ, the front springs will swap in on the XJ and give around an inch of lift.

IIRC if it's a V8 ZJ the tie-rod is a little thicker too.

I believe the windshield wipers are interchangeable....

What's a good way to get an inch in the back, while keeping the ride smooth? Is there a noticeable improvement in the ride with the ZJ front springs?

Depending on what year it could also have a 136amp alt.

For a little more lift in the back you could probably throw in the main leaf from another Cherokee leaf set or get yourself some Comanche shackles. The shackles are about 1/2"-3/4" longer than the XJ and are beefier.
Not sure about the ride with the ZJ springs. They come off the V8 model, so I'd suspect they had a slighter stronger spring rate.

You're looking for one from one of these with a v8...
1997-1998 Dodge B.Series Van
1997-1998 Dodge Dakota
1998 Dodge Durango
1997-1998 Dodge Ram Pickup
1997-1998 Jeep Grand CherokeeIf you have an older cherokee with a delco alt. you will have to buy and run an external voltage regulator because the newer denso alts. don't have a regulator they are controlled by the jeep's computer, but if your jeep came with a denso you're fine running one.

aren't zj LCA's a bit beefier too, with a bend for tire clearance?
Search junkyard parts in the mod tech, a few motnhs back there was a prett comprehensive list of junkyard mods.

Depending on year, the seats. And, as mentioned rear disc brakes. I also like some of the rims they come with.

they're alike only in name.
Zj's were the early 90's grand cherokees, square headlights, Wj's were the late 90's models wth the slanted grill sides. The didn't share platforms.
WK's are the new grands with the IFS

so is the older one (zj?) the one with more swappable parts for an xj, or is it all "part dependent?"

The ZJ ('93-'98) tends to have more mod parts for the XJ than the WJ ('99-'04).

it has the same dual-diaphragm booster as the 95+ XJs? do you know if it has the 96 down rod or the 97+ rod?

The ZJ (93-98) definitely has more swapover parts. The front suspension/steering is practically the same. The rear disc brakes can be converted. Some ZJ's (mine:) have the 242 transfer case, which is good. I also believe the front seats could exchange. Oh, and the 4.0 is pretty much the same in the ZJ as XJ. Trans is completely different though. Rear axle is a D35, but it has coil mounts. And ABS was standard on all ZJ's.
The WJ uses the same 4.0 too, just a little bit different plumbing. But the WJ is really a totally different vehicle from the XJ/ZJ. Aside from the 4.0 the WJ shares nothing. Many hard core Jeep enthusiasts don't consider the WJ a 'real' Jeep because it is so different. At least it has a solid front axle...which can't be said for the Libby or new Grand.
