iam new to this fourm but i hope yall can help? i have an 89xj with 4.0 and everytime i drive it it dies. it dont loose all power just the motor dies. and then like magic it will come back sometimes. not all the time though lol. when it dies for alog time and i pull over to the side of the road and try to start it.i will i have to let it set for like 10min or so before it will start. its back fired some many times its blown up my muffler lol. sounds great! i checked the cps,tps.new plugs,wires.cap,rotor. but it does not do it all the time. i mean it does it everyday but not at the same time everyday iam at a loss any help would be great.

when you checked the CPs did you do it with the motor hot?

no, does that matter? if so my manual tells me how to test the cps but could not understand it can u tell me how?

Most of the time that test is useless. Try to unplug the CPS and plug it back in the next time it stops, if it starts the CPS is bad.

Hot shorts in the ignition components happen a lot regardless of type. I suspect the pickup coil in the distributor is the cause.

I'm going with Langer and suspect the CPS first.
it's a more fragile component than the coil.
Coil failurse are pretty infrequent compared to CPS failures, both will shut down the ignition.
Next time it dies do as Langer suggests, if it does not start you need to diagnose it further.
Check for spark first, if you have spark it's likely a fuel delivery problem.
Check that the fuel pump runs, perhaps even bypass the resisotr on the drivers side fender.

ya, i have a brand new distribtor still no luck can u tell me how to test the cps,tps?

All ready did in post 6

You can also check ohms should be 175 +-5 but some will pass that test and still be bad.

I think they get magnetized some times.
