235/75 or 255/70 tires on a stock XJ?

I currently have 235/75/15 General Grabber AT2s on my stock 00 XJ, but they're bald and I'm looking for opinions whether to replace them with the same size, or to go with a 255/70 instead.

Pretty much the only difference according to this tire calculator:
http://www.dakota-truck.net/TIRECALC/tirecalc.html
is that the 255 is about .75" wider than the 235.

No, I'm not putting a lift on it.
No, I'm not going to buy new wheels.
No, I'm not going to buy 30x9.5s
(see... I have read the forums)

Mainly used for on-road driving, but sometimes I get a little muddy.

Some threads say the 255s will rub at full lock, others say they're fine. :dunno:

if they rub, adjust the steering stops.

if there 3/4 wider than what you have, turn to full lock and crawl under and see if you have less than 3/8' clearance.

you also have the answer: some say they rub, some say they dont.

Well the 255/70/15 equals a 29x10 so it will probably rub on the lower control arms at full lock. You also have to watch your brake lines...don't want to wear a hole in them. The 235/55 already equals 29x9.25 so If you DON'T want 30x9.50s and you don't want to rub I would just keep the 235/75s.

Both of those sizes are 29 inches tall...but the 255/70 is 10" wide and the 235/75 is 9.25" wide.

Yeah, that makes sense. Ah well.... wider would be nice, but..... you know.
