Mike try'd this in the for sale section, I'll try it here. lol. This will probably be the last time I get to wheel before I deploy so I am for sure going. This is an awsome run that can at times can be very challenging, Some good size rocks that prove challenging. But with a good spoter not a prob.
Hi everyone. I am planning to get out to Corral Canyon for a run on Sunday March 2. I know the date conflicts with some other events happening in So Cal, but for anyone in who doesn't already have plans, Corral Canyon is a pretty fun run.
I was thinking of meeting at 4 Corners staging area around 10:30-11:00 am.
Corral Canyon is about 1 hour or so out from San Diego. Here's a map to get there:
http://www.sdorc.org/ohvareas/c_canyon/cc_map.jpg
And some more info:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/cleveland/re...v/corral.shtml
Also for anyone who is interested in guns, I plan on hitting up Carrizo Creek for some target shooting before wheeling. I'm thinking of being at Carizzo Creek at about 8:00 to 8:30 until about 10:00, then heading to Corral Canyon to be there about 10:30.
I'm flexible on the times, so if you want to come, let me know what time works best.

It's in Jacumba about 20 miles east of Buckman Springs Road (which is the exit for Corral Canyon).

this sounds like a perfect run for testing the new lift... but i am concerned that 3.5" and 31"s might be a little undergunned and i don't want to be the new guy holding up the scene.
i'm interested though!

Think that mike only has 31's or 32's just need to be brave not affraid of the skinny pedal and trust the spotter when needed. And have recovery points. There was only one part that we hit that we really had a hard time on, we'll just keep you in the middle incase you need a tug.

The Forest Service doesn't update their site much... best is to call. I know it's open, but I'll call and check next week just to be sure.
I run a 4.5" in 31.5's with stock gearing and open/open... and just that one hard spot slowed me down much. I did crunch the rocker panel a bit. Without armor, I'd say there's a decent chance of some damage...

Hmm, stock with no hooks, have fun on the easy outer loop trail. ha!
Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere without proper attachments, even if you were lifted and locked front and rear. That goes double with stockers. But it's homebrew's thing, so it's his call.
How about a hitch in the back? At least you could be pulled out of something.
homebrew
February 21st, 2008, 17:26
gotta have recovery points a hitch at the very least. I proved that nessessity my very first time out.
May be a better Idea to ride shot gun that way you can experience what a rig that is properly equiped is like rather than risk your ride getting trashed due to lack of clearence and damage from strap pulls to unsafe recovery points.

i have the rockers and tank squared away, but i still need to mount my hitch, mount up the cb system, and do something about the front recovery points. i have the rear hitch in hand and want to do a front receiver for the front for recovery... but i should be able to get that done in a week's time.
i 'll have a couple of seasoned buddies riding with me if i make it there.
sounds like it's going to be a fun little run.

Hehe, I can top that....
Went wheelin in the Everglades with a buddy and got stuck in a 4' deep gator hole...had to leave the Jeep overnight, walk out, and bring help the next day. When we got back to the rig, the occupant of said gator hole had relocated occupancy to my Wrangler. :rattle:

hey, I should have asked first, but...do we need any kind of pass to do this? Like some vehicle permit form the forestry department or anything? As I recall, you need a sticker of some sort for Big Bear, and I don't wanna be the gimp that shows up unprepared.
BTW, nice lookin wrangler. I would highly suggest looking for some rocker panel armor for it though. Being a wrangler, everybody and their brother makes parts for it, but OYR (if they're still around) makes some pretty affordable and hella well built rocker guards.

Oh hehe, I didn't necessarily mean by next weekend. =) I just saw all that pretty paint. I also built my wrangler on a budget, so price was important to me. As I recall, my OYR panels were shipped to Miami for under $200 total cost. They're manufactured in Half Moon Bay, CA so they couldn't have been shipped much further and they weigh a friggin' ton! But I tell ya, They took some pretty hard hits and never budged. And no, I'm not a salesman for them, but if i wasn't so damn lazy I would have written several testimonials. =) But again, I don't even know if they're still around. I haven't had a YJ for almost 5 years and OYR don't make squayt for a cherokee.

An Adventure Pass (http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/cleveland/passes/index.shtml) may be required for all vehicles parked anywhere on the Cleveland National Forest. The pass IS required in OHV areas. Please contact the district office (http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/cleveland/contact/index.shtml) to find out where you will need one in order to park.
That's under the "camping" section so I don't know if you'll need one for day use of the trails. I'll call the forest service this week and get details.

I have a map/brochure on the area and it says, "An adventure pass is required for all vehicles PARKED anywhere on the Cleveland National Forest, this includes OHV campgrounds or trailheads."
I think we'd be ok if we never stopped for lunch or broke on the trail but it's probably a good idea to get them.:)
The corner store by my house sells them, if you guys want to get the passes I'll buy them for the group once we get a solid vehicle count. I think they're 5 bucks.

Bushwacker makes some under the name of Trailarmor but they are only plastic and the use adhesive to mount them. Don't know if they would actaully serve any real purpose. They are affordable though.

Yes and yes to your questions . I would recommend CB's for everyone, but know that not everyone has the cheese to afford one, My recommendation to deal with this is at a minimum having a cb in the trail leader and tail gunner that way if anyone in between gets stuck or needs a spotter they are not lost.

Sounds like you'll be fine on recovery points. Do you have a lift/bigger tires or any armor? It is pretty rocky in some spots. With no lift or armor, I would say there is a chance at some damage... but being locked will definately help get up the hill.
No problem on the GPS or CB.

In my opinion, just have fun. Sounds like your rig is plenty ready for this run... and being locked/locked, you may have to lead us up the hill... and pull some of us open/open trucks up with you!!
For me, this will really only be my second time wheeling at Corral Cayon, and I think it is Homebrew's 2nd time there as well. Sounds like a couple guys (markw and mikedashg) have more experience on those trails. Just follow the truck in front of you, and someone will spot when it gets rocky.

You're probably right.
The range is always open... it's just an barren piece of land... but it is about 90 minutes from my house, so I was already planning on leaving my house before 7:00 am to get there by 8:30... I don't want to leave much earlier than that.
I could hit the range after the wheeling if you want to start earlier. I would just need to leave my clay pigeons at the staging area (they wouldn't survive past the first rock!)... if you want to do that, we could plan on leaving the staging area by 9:30-10:00... if that works for everyone?
I'm pretty flexible...

Great vids! I'm excited!! I'm in!
Gonna try for new tires on Saturday morning, but I also realized that my front DS vibe is from a loose front output yoke...I'm guessing it's probably a bad bearing, and I was wondering if anyone might have a place and time on Sat to assist in some last minute repairs....i.e., a freeze plug in a crappy spot, a new front output bearing in the 231, and a general once over on torquing bolts down? If not, I'll try and bang it out myself...either way though, I'm comin'!
Although, I will say, after watching those vids, I'm only locked in the front with 260-x u-joints...hope there's bypasses =(

Stopped AT ALL? That's ridiculous. I've wheeled at Corral Canyon a million times and never got an adventure pass. In my book the adventure pass is if you are going to PARK your vehicle, ie leave it. Like park it for camping, or parking and go hiking. Stopping on the trail for lunch, or stopping to fix your broken junk does not count. Just because your stopped doesn't mean your parking your vehicle there. On top of which, if we stop it all, it's not for that long. And on top of that, I highly doubt the ranger is going to be going down to Bronco looking for guys who are eating lunch. That type of stopping falls under "activities incidental to through travel" (see below).
I'm not saying I'm against the pass or anything, the forest could always use the money, go a head and get one, but I'm not. I would definitely get one if I thought I might park my vehicle to go do something else other then use the restroom, eat lunch, photo op, etc. But since I'm just traveling through the forest, rules say I don't need one...
from: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/ap/questions-and-answers.shtml#exceptions
"Are there exceptions to the need for an Adventure Pass?
You will not need a pass when traveling through the Forest and not stopping, when stopped for activities incidental to through travel (stretch break, photo-opportunity, use a restroom), when you are parked at your residence or at an organization camp, or within areas covered by special use permits. A Pass is not required for people stopping for information at Ranger stations, visitor centers and other Forest Service offices, or for off-road vehicles (displaying California State OHVMR Green or Red stickers) while they are parked within a designated OHV route or area. Volunteers and educational institutions, such as schools that bring children to the Forest for an outing, are also exempt..."

I'm not worried about it either way, but they are only 5 bucks. :shiver: Some of the Rangers out here will invite you up to the tower and make conversation, others will want to write tickets for stupid things. It's a roll of the dice...;)
It's their job to sell passes, whatever let's just wheel. Plus the rangers will be very out gunned, HA HA THAT'S A JOKE PEOPLE.

So, Please finalize the times.
Where and when?
Is breakfast out?
If so I will allow time to stop on the way.
I will have an adventure pass. It's only $5...

These times are good for me.

Here's the deal on the adventure passes. Get one, don't scrape it and throw it in your glove box. Then if you get stopped or they start questioning, play dumb and go, oh crap yeah, I forgot, pull it out scrape and hang it. Otherwise, don't worry about it.
So, how many open/open rigs?
Tow points? I saw a picture of one with the hooks bolted to the stock bumper, not a good thing, front hitch, or factory hooks up front, same with rear.
Someone sounds to have major transfercase issues, recommend fixing before wheeling, not day of or day before. If you can grab the front output of your 231 and shake it, I'll gurantee there's more than just 1 bearing bad in the thing. Worse case, watch the for sale and pick up a used one that doesn't wiggle and go through that one, then install.
Not sure if I'll make this or not, got to get clearance from the CFO.

No, the TJ is ok, those are factory hooks. This was a black XJ with yellow trim.
XJ factory hooks are available at your local wrecking yard, or from Custome 4x4 fab. The Rusty's hooks don't have the front angle plate to keep them from bending.

Nah, it's not all that. only 3 parts involved...the yoke, the shaft and gear end, and the bearing. The nut might just be loose for all I know....but I haven't been up under it in a bit. I'm actually more concerned about the freeze plug. =(

True story I am at 6 in open/limited and I had a hard time. I dont want to discourage anyone from coming, you never know what you can do in your rig until you try. Im sure there will be alot off shotgun seats open so if your not sure you want to abuse your rig just ask for a shot gun. ocean-jet, 100% that I'm running locked. I have ARB front and rear. 2 years later can't wait to test those things out. Plus I just picked up the inflation kit for the compressor. I just told my wife that we needed to air up the kids bike tires, but we all know the real reason behind that.
Last nite she kind of threw me off. She doesn't like my modified TJ flares that I've been running, so she suggested that I get some bushwackers. Then she was mentioning that I need to get a rear tire carrier. And going on and on about what I could do with the Rig, so as I was laying there I just thought man this is a God. I'm so glad I leave my catalogs in the Sh#$ter.

Hard to say, its not like cleghorn where there are a lot of fire roads. Me and mike did 2 trails and it took us about 3 hours. With a group of ten rigs I would estimate that we could be out there as long as 5 hours. Depending on the trails that we decide to run, which we wont be able to do until we get to look at the capability of the rigs in attendance.

Don't waste your money on the 27 spline. Upgrade the shafts/carrier, or swap axles. You won't have too many issues, lots of bypasses. Biggest thing is climbing up stuff, and if you have a front locker you shouldn't have an issue.

yeah, I just saw one for $300...figured I could use that until could afford either a detroit for a 29 spline, or better yet, a D44, at which point I could sell the locker, carrier, shafts for $150 and not be too bad off. =) (In the meantime I'll just carry shafts and have a light right foot).
Now, if I have to change the front output bearing in the 231, is there anything special I need for that? will a regular bearing install/removal kit work? I'm scared to hit it with a hammer...the cases sound so damn brittle. I just don't want to get half way into the job, only to find I can't finish. And what is the best way to find a part number for that bearing should I have to replace it? I guess the ability to purchase one overrides everything else. =)

Again, if that bearing is shot, the other end probably isn't looking good, plus you've probably had metal running through everything. Be ready for the worst. I'd start shopping for a xfer case myself. :)

well, like I say, I'm hoping it's just a loose yoke nut...the rig has only been in 4wd once since the SYE install. Immediately after that it developed a front output leak, but the yoke needed to be tightened down....didn't have a torque wrench either, so I have no idea how tight it is....just got one last weekend, but it's only goes to 80 ft/lb (and I haven't even tried that yet)....I'll get a beefier one this week and torque it to 110 and see where I stand.

I wouldn't recommend going up Bronco with open diffs. I was locked the first time I did it, but I've heard stories. I'd prefer not to spend all day out there though. We could run Sidewinder coming in from the parking lot, then go down Bronco. Looks like Homebrew is planning on meeting a McD's at 9:00.
The McD's is about 1:10-1:15 hours to the 4 Corners Area.
So, I assume we planning on trying to hit the trail by 10:30 at the latest.
As for shooting, I am planning on leaving San Diego area around 7:00am to get to the range by about 8:30, or so. We'll shoot until about 9:30 or so, and plan to be back at 4 Corners at about 10:15.
If anyone wants, we could plan to meet up and Buckman Springs exit, and caravan to 4 Corners so no one gets lost. Maybe at 10:00?

Ok, good news and bad news....
Good news is the T-case isn't as bad as I thought...infact it doesn't move side to side at all as I remembered, instead it slides in and out on the shaft by perhaps 1/16 inch and it is under torque....so I think I'm fine there.
Bad news is the freeze plugs won't go in the motor. =( I've got them in the freezer now hoping that will shrink them down enough to get them in...but I feel like I'm smacking them a lot harder than I should be.
Any suggestions are highly welcomed....
Anyway, at this point my rig may be tenative on showing, but if there's a free seat available should I not be able to get it back together in time, I wouldn't mind just tagging along and playing winch bitch.

Michael,
I don't really know... but I found this:
11. I chose brass freeze plugs to replace the old steel ones. I didn’t want to perform this repair again in 5 years. The Jeep 4.0L engine uses 2” freeze plugs. I found mine at Napa, but competent engine machine shops will likely have them also. I applied a light coating of RTV to the outside of the freeze plug and drove it in place using a socket and a hammer. It can take a little effort to get the freeze plug started, but keep working at it and make sure that the plug drives into the block straight. Drive the freeze plug to the same depth as the others.
http://www.mcma-online.org/techfiles/freezeplugs40.html
Maybe the RTV will act as a lube to help it slide in???
SanDiegoXJ
February 29th, 2008, 12:18
Heh, tried rtv too...didn't help. I'm freezing the plugs now to see if that helps any, but these are noticeably larger than the old ones. I also got mine from napa, brass 2" plug. I just cant for the life of me get it to budge...keeps popping to one side or another...mebbe I'm just not driving it perfectly straight, but it looks pretty good to me.

They are on the engine block. If your coolant freezes, it expands. These plugs will pop out if it freezes. Otherwise, you could crack the block when the coolant tries to expand.
Follow the link I posted above... it has pictures.

If anyone is, I will definately be there.

OK, so the Jeep is finally running again. And it appears to be leak free. However, I literally just finished slapping it together about 10 minutes ago and went for a quick 5 min test drive. So, it looks good, but considering I basically replaced the entire drivers side of the engine bay (or so it feels like), I'm a little hesitant to take it out wheeling until I can get some more test time in, but I gotta run to a family thing now, so that's not gonna happen. Anyone got a spare seat that needs balast...I'd like to come, if for no other reason than to familiarize myself with the place....just don't wanna find out a I made a booboo on a freeze plug while on the trail and either have to tow it off the mountain or go through this all again on the trail. :banghead:

I finally got the Jeep packed and ready for tomorrow. Threw some tools, and some extra fluid together. I picked a up a hose kit for my ARB compressor and got done finishing installing that. I called the Big 5 sports near my house they only sell the annual adventure pass. So I'm thinking I'm going to renegade it. Added to the fact that I'm not bringing the kids, so I'm not worried about stopping to much.

Apparently not all RD1462 packs are the same. These are different thickness on the leaves, the sagging one is thinner. Wonder if it's a 3.5 and not a 4.5?? Anyway, talking with MikeG, and am going to try and find a center pin to put the one pack back together. I'm one short at the moment.

Just wanted to say thanx to everyone that went....I may have just been a ride-a-long and the token drunk, but had a blast!
As for what you missed...the hits were a lot higher than anticipated. I think everyone but Homebrew took body damage of some sort. Other than that we were looking at a bent tie-rod, a torn break line, and yet another punctured MTR.
However, the moments that would be shown on sports center both came on Bronco Peak. mikedashg and ocean_jet provided the entertainment for the day with their near rollovers. Mike's "When in doubt, throttle it out" attitude kept us all entertained. However, the other Mike's efforts were no less valient! God, I hope somebody got video of that!!! =)

It gave everybody a lesson on where not to stand. Good times. Unfortunately SanDiegoXJ nobody is getting drunk tonight at the house. Just thankful to get home in one peice. Yup, trails are changing all the time. Sometimes making the trail easier, or sometimes harder. Either due to mother earth, bigger rigs digging big holes with the big tires, or smaller rigs stacking rocks.
You guys would've been able to sidewinder much easier. Mark and I ran it that day in about 45 minutes after we were done with Bronco. We still beat you guys back. Of course you guys had the brakeline issue. We even stopped a bunch of times either for photos, or on-coming traffic. We could've probably taking you guys through in it 2 or 3 hours easy.

Yeah, if I knew gunslinger was that easy and that part of bronco was going to be that tough, I would've suggested starting out with sidewinder, and then go up to the fire lookout tower. Gunslinger was like a fire road. I've been going to corral canyon for years, but I've never done gunslinger, I guess now I know why.
