Well finally got the shockes through the floor after cutting and more cutting and even more cutting. I am aching in places I didnt know I could ache in. Then to top it all off I pulled a muscle in my left butt cheek WTF. The Xj worked me over like Kimbo did Tank Abott. Sorry for the blurr pic but i was too damm tired to take a pic with a better camera I will this weekend after I get the fenders on. Still need to finish the battery tray and seal up the huge hole we cut out of the rear tire well then decided to ditch the idea lol but in all im a happy camper. I was like wow the disc brakes is the way to go I noticed a huge difference in stopping, way better now. Props goes out to Brian and Ozz at Gt-Pitstop in Grand Terrace. If any of you local guys need work, done hit them up.

I would mount the reservoirs on the hoop to get them out of the way.

did you box the frame rail in after all the cutting? I dont have hardly as much cut and im right in between the rail amd the fender.

not sure what you mean the shock is in the inner side of the frame not outer side near the tire well. We were going to originally put it on the out side but with the shocks ihave there wasnt any up travel at all. So decide to go with the inner side of the frame , so instead of mounting ontop of the spring pearch its now mounted in middle of axle

ahhhh yeah i see what you mean now. But in the pic it looks like the cut you made on the right goes straight through the frame rail.

yeah I actually started to cut into it but stopped. Had to weld it up and still need to fix the hole we cut out just gonna plate it up.

a little trial and error LOL

I went and did outside the rail as swbooking mentioned as well. I feel the stability and effective rate of the shock is better suited further out. And as for stroke, I run a 14" stroke and have full use of 100% of it. But if this worked better on your rig, then thats cool.

Is the lower cross brace welded to the floor between the inner fenders also? If not you might want to concide that as well as a brace in shear up the fenderwell to each cross. I used a 1.5x1.5 angle as seen on each end in the finished picture.

And even after removing 90% of the body I still kept this portion.

hey rob are your shocks mounted to the spring perches that's how I was originally going to mount them but I got too long of a shock"16" I would of had no up travel it was either build a taller hoop which I will when I cage it or go in the inside how we did which gave us the 3-4inch we needed. Your set up is sick I'm really liking it

Well I am at 6-7" of lift but I am also on top of the spring pack. My shock is at 6.75 of compression and 7.25 of droop. I would think a 16" travel shock would never get fully used with a XJ rear leaf setup. I had deavers and rough countrys as well as now full tractions jeepspeed setup leaf's. All of which the max usable travel was at best 14" (deaver and FT packs). So I went 14" shocks.

In any case here is a picture of the axle side mount, when I had the 8.8 in it. Now with the 14bolt it is the same in placement and design. I have heard of people using sway bar mounts from the XJ for this type of setup also. But since I have the ubolt eliminators I had a nice flat plate to mount to.

yeah im about the same highet as Robert and used 14" travel shocks as well and used the sway bar mounts for the shock. Works pretty good except i dont really like the fit of the schok through the hole its a little tight im going to have to place my upper mounts a little further out on the crossbar.

Looks good... How I did mine on Roberts old cage, cross bar tied into the unibody rails. Only issue I ran into was the exhust.

Yeah i made the mistake of the measurment of the shock and got 16 should have got 14 then i could have went with my original plan of going on the outside like yours robert. Lesson learned so i had to make what i had work the best way i could. I agree its is better to have them the most outside as possible but how they are now i think will be ok till i get the cage and then i can move them up and to the outside. Actually they arent bad at all how i have them now they soaked some whoops pretty damm good

Question fro you guys in your opinion do you think that having them were i do now it would make much defference by moving them to the outside and mounting them to spring perch? I wondered what defference if any were talking maybe a 12inches each way

DAYM thats right I left that thing in there huh? I was just thinking about a week ago I wonder where I put that thing. I need to find a new mount and go get another.

Wait there was two in there right>?

The pic is a little deceiving, my lower mounts are about 2 inches in from the spring pad on the axle so it ended up with about a 15 deg kick in at the top mount.

That really helps the rate. straight up and down that far in though I would question and if I had the time would redo.

Hey Robert, that rear diff looks familiar.

:D

I have 14" 7100's coming.
I need a upper shock bar mount. You need a Chevy engine.

;)

The goal isnt to have a shock you use 100% of esp. the rear (where you can afford the room). The longer shock will have a larger fluid capacity so that helps with cooling as well. Not a problem if you romp through the desert and stop every 10 minutes to take poser pictures (like desertrangers...haha) but if you drive long distances on bumpy roads or hard on it that will help out. Go 18" and move the upper mount up its not bad for it.
