So I was talking to my buddy about buying skid plates for my XJ. He informed me that if I buy the material he will have no problem making me skid plates. With that said, what is a good material to use? I am still a little iffy about letting him make them for me. Would it be fairly easy to make them?

Lets start off by asking what kind of skids are you looking to fab up. Diffs, TC, Tranny, Gas tank, Control arms, Underwear? A little more info, and we'd be able to help you a little more. 
3/16" is good starting material for skids. You may want to go to 1/4" if you do rocks and such, IMO.
