I did some searching here and read about a "flexplate", can someone tell me what this flexplate does? Are they on both auto and manual transmissions?

Sounds like i need to know about this part!

Thanks!

An auto has a flexplate; a manual has a flywheel. Not the same thing.

A flex plate (aka) drive plate replaces the flywheel on a automatic.
On a XJ 4.0 it has the gear on it for the starter and notches for the CPS timing.
The other thing is it connects the crankshaft to the torque converter.

also, there is a significant difference in weight since a flex-plate really is only the same diameter as a flywheel so that it can engage the starter and CPS and is made fairly light, whereas a flywheel is much heavier to add inertia to the crank.
