Does anyone know of a guide that describes how to take a part the dash in a 96 and earlier XJ? I searched, and found almost every post was about 97+ XJ's.

Have you searched for a pre-97 FSM on line? If you do, that will describe is gory detail exactly how to remove the dash on a pre-97.
