View Full Version : So much for the JEEP

So I got hit in my JEEP today. Guy failed to yield at a flashing yellow intersection and nailed me doing close to 40mph. Shitty thing is that even though he was issued a citation (I wasn't) and the cop said it was his fault the insurance companies can still deem that I am negligent and therefore still responsible for repairs to my vehicle. Still, considering the guy was cool enought to own up to the cop I'm hoping he'll admit fault to his insurance company as well. I had to spend a year in Iraq to get cheap insurance again, I don't want it to go back up because someone slammed into my JEEP. On the plus side, I'm really glad I was driving the JEEP as it probably would have killed be and my g/f had we been in her car. He hit me foken hard but the JEEP was still able to drive me home, albeit a bit precariously. That thing took a hell of an impact so I'm hoping it can be fixed back to tip top. It deserves it and JEEP's have definately earned themselves a permanent place in my driveway because it definately kept me and my g/f (also my unborn child) safe.

The thing that really has me worried is my steering wheel is tilted fully up, even though its set fully down. Also the "frame" rail in the passenger side is definately bent. My driver's side fender is also out of wack to the point that my door hits it when its opened. If you look closely at the close up of the hood you can see the whole thing is shifted over.
Oh yeah, and now not only am I out of a car until its repaired but I also have to wait for the insurance companies to even decide if I'm liable at all or not. Horse shit.

Glad you are OK, and that's what counts.
Get a copy of the police report as soon as it is available. Send a copy to your insurance agent, and you keep a copy for your records.
If the guy told the police he was at fault, and it was documented, and he got a ticket, unless he is underinsured, you should be OK.

Uhual is inbound as I type this, tomorrow the thread will be "I can't believe someone stole my wrecked jeep!"
I've often wondered how safe my heep would be in a collision, since it seems to want to kill me without hitting anything I tend to think I'd be a goner.

Man, that sucks. Nice looking XJ - ya hate to see 'em bent like that.
Don't be surprised if your insurance company deems it totaled. Seems like the slightest bit of frame tweakage and they write 'em off. I've certainly seen a ton of other similar wrecks at Klode's and always scratched my melon wondering why they don't put 'em on a frame jig and get them back onto the road.
I bought a '96 that was an insurance total - seems hard to believe that this is considered totaled:

Discuss with your insurance the option to buy it back if they total it. You may be able to take it to a frame shop yourself and get it straightened. Although, you'll probably get a salvage title out of the deal. Not a big deal if you intend to keep it and wheel the hell out of it for a long time.

I can't decide if I like it or not. I like the steering wheel, and the silver surround for the center of the dash. I also like the more modern aspect of the headlights, although the front end also looks a little goofy. What I find weird is that it has the modern US (97 ^) interior except in the cargo area. It also still uses the pre-97 body and hatch. Its like a mix of three generations of cherokee, one of wich being a generation that was denied us when they canned the XJ.

UPDATE:
Despite the fact that the responding police officer cited the other driver and said he was at fault State Farm determined that after their "Magic 8Ball" investigation I am 50% responsible and therefore they won't cover my vehicle. Now I'm going through my insurance to try and get this thing resolved.
I'm also trying to decide if I should put my stock suspension and tires back on before I take it in. If it does get totalled I want to keep them to use later or sell, but if it doesn't (or I decide to buy it back) I don't want to have to put the lift on again. Suggestions?
Also, dose anyone have a shop or well equipped garage that would be willing to let me use it this weekend to do the swap? I'd rather not have to drive it all the way to Ft. Carson to use the Car Craft Center.

Put all the stock stuff back on, a friend of mine just went through the same thing with State farm with his Tacoma. He took it to the shop, and they hauled it to the junk yard the way you see it in the pic. Even took his winch.

If you end up taking it to Carson let me know, I'll help out. Still learning stuff, but an extra pair of hands is always helpful.

You are not 50% liable for anything... use two words on the insurance company "Good Faith"... Tell them that you do not accept their finding because the officer cited the other driver.
Also, why isn't the other driver's insurance covering the accident? Don't settle anything until the guy's ticket goes to court, once he pays it or is found guilty, the burden of proof for civil court is met and he becomes 100% liable in a civil suit. All you'd have to do is file it and the judge will award in your favor. Accept nothing until then or you're SOL.
Good Luck,
Joe

Well hopefully my insurance company will rule in my favor. Then it'll be a 5 round championship fight between USAA (mine) and State Farm (douche's). I'm betting USAA will win.
