No intention to upstage the chapter run, I want that up front, but I'm thinking of running down this Saturday instead.
I'm really needing to play in the sand and I won't be able to make the Chapter run on the 16th, due to scheduling of family events that are out of my control.

The weather is supposed to be nice....... 50's and sunny, anyone else with scheduling issues want to join me?

Prolly head south to Nephi, then West to Jerico Jct. on Hwt 132. $8 BLM entrance fee and orange flag (zip tied to CB antenna or 8' from ground whip) required.

I'm a maybe on this one Jeff. I have some wheeling friends going to Moab for President's Day weekend, and would love to squeeze both in. Are you thinking an all day affair, or just a few hours? Is there a number to call the BLM and check how deep the snow is?

It would, of course, take a miracle to have the XJ fully functional by this weekend, but I could still take our TJ. Might be fun to grab a trailer and a couple quads too.

Great Jared, XJ or TJ......whatever is ready to wheel. Thinking of heading out with Mason around 6:30- 7am, get there about 9:30-10am and wheel until we're sick of the sand.

Just spoke with Sara at the BLM station and she said they have 3" of snow on the sand but it will likely melt off by the weekend, based on the forcast for temps in the 40's Thurs-Saturday.

We're in. It's gonna stink waking the kids up that early though...

I bet with fresh snow and the fact that its going to warm up just a little will make the dunes perfect.

Jeff showed up with his son Mason. I brought my wife Hollie, and our two kids Logan and Anna. We got off to a late start after one of Ogden's finest saw fit to cite me for an obvious lack of mud flaps. Then we had to make a pit stop in Payson to pick up a flag for my forgetful self. Smooth trip down otherwise.

We arrived to Little Sahara, greeted by the sign that read "DAYS SINCE LAST SERIOUS INJURY - 6". Always nice to see it never reaches double digits. We soon discovered it wouldn't be reaching 7. There was double ATV injury, where they life-flighted two riders out.

We experienced all the dunes had to offer that day. We zipped around bowls, shot up and down steep grades, raced JeepSpeed style, and got some major (33' long!) air time.

Here's a few of our meager photos to wet your appetite for next week!

Jeff's "always stellar looking" XJ running round a bowl.

A couple of nearly dead ATV riders who flipped their bike over on top of themselves while climbing a steep hill.

My wife took some awesome air time photos on Jeff's camera after our battery bit the dust. All I can say is WOW! Get those photos up quick Jeff!

Thanks,

My kids having a blast on a sled! I think Mason liked it even more than my kids did.

Why you shouldn't use a brand new $75 12" travel Bilstein shock absorber as a limiting strap. This shock had about 200 miles on it... DOH!

We had great weather and the sand was just right for dune running in the Jeep........and just as we were pulling out of the Sand Mtn parking area to play, we heard a siren and this sweet sand ambulance rolled in on a trailer.

It's one of the first BLM rescue sandrails using a LS1 Chevrolet engine. The sandrail is equipped with a new trauma kit, portable suction kit, pulse oximeter, digital blood pressure cuffs, and rescue litter.

It's never a good sign when Life Flight shows up to your party..........hope the folks are OK.

The kids got right down to business with some sand saucer-ing, great idea Jared!

We even found some rock to play on, not much but enough for a poser shot.

Looks like you guys had a good time. I would have gone had my junk been put together in time. I'll be lucky if it is done by fall fling.

BTW, Jeff always has the cleanest rig around:)

DeadEyeJ
February 10th, 2008, 10:34
Poor excuse Barney... my rig probably won't be done by fall fling either. But there I was, driving it half-finished, ripping shocks in half and having a blast.

Now, where are those darn flight lesson photos Jeff?

After lunch, we ventured out to the backside of Sand Mountain, where the bigger bowls can be found.

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w52/XJEEPER1/Trail%20Shots/100_2327.jpg

It didn't take long to locate one with a perfect lip and smooth downhill landing, for some sweet "bowl to bowl transitions".........

Wait for it..............wait for it...........

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w52/XJEEPER1/Trail%20Shots/100_2342.jpg

With the early stages of perma-grin setting in, we paused to let the kids roll in the sand some more.

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w52/XJEEPER1/Trail%20Shots/100_2345.jpg

Out of curiosity, I stepped off the shortest take-off and landing........ approx 33ft. We both had some that were probably another Jeep length beyond that and with a downhill landing in soft sand, the touchdown was surprisingly smooth.
I need to do some dialing in of limit straps and bumps, but all in all, the new Jeep works well, and with the trussed and gusseted D30 and the uni-rails stiffened, I worry less about playing a little "harder" with this rig.

So, you don't want to get in the Jeep and leave this giant sandbox, you say....? Forget kicking and screaming your protest............ just play dead.

Other than Jared's shock fatality, it was a great day at Little Sahara.

Those photos were much funner to pose for than they are to look at, I assure you!

I believe it was more of a "MY MID LIFE CRISIS IS OFFICIALLY OVER!", battle cry type of exclamation rather than the "I AM CURRENTLY SOILING MYSELF!" type.

You're ALL wrong........... this shot captured the "Waaaaa.......which was followed by a "HOOOOOO". I still get a little adrenal surge when I look at this shot.....

You're right Jared, this was the perfect roller, with a long, smooth take-off and a smooth downhill landing in the adjacent bowl.
