alright so i decided it was time to replace the cracked exhaust manifold, got through it all quite smoothly other than some interesting bolt locations behind the new header. however. I go to fire it up...and thought I had nearly done just that. After about 20 seconds a lot of smoke started coming up on that whole side of the engine. it is very light and nearly oderless...which is nothing ive ever seen before... so I turn off the ignition, eye the fire extinguisher, making sure its close by, and after a couple minutes the smoke goes away. then it occured to me that it could simply be the vasaline-type coating it was delivered in burning off...which im pretty sure is the case...so I did the same process a few times and same results. anyone run into this? could it just be the coating burning off or is my engine about to burst into flames? any input would be great....id rather be 100% sure than have to actually use that extinguisher. thanks

its the gasket getting hot for the first time and perhaps some of the new coating. Mine did it to.

thanks for the reply sean that makes a lot of sense. im going to go out and let it run for a bit and see if anything has changed

alright so I just let it run for a bit and let it sort itself out, all is fine. However as expected, solve one problem and run into a new one... I turned it on this morning and let it run for a few minutes checking everything over, I give it a little throttle and this loud noise started up. Its almost like a squeal but raspier like a grounded +ve wire or maaybe air escaping through a gap...its that kind of sound and its nearly ear piercing when you get up close to it. Its coming from the 1st or 2nd fuel injector area or that wiring cover that runs along side the fuel rail. its not coming from below that area or anywhere else. The noise goes away immediately when I give it a little bit of gas, but comes back when you get go. on a side note...the check engine light is on as well. any input would help

haha ya doesnt give off a nice smell either eh. my banks (not my first choice but hey I got it for $100 off a friend who bought it and totalled his XJ b4 he could install it...so im not complaining) had the crap all over it and it was like throwing a bucket of water into the engine bay (not that I would know what this is like but I can assume...) anyways...any ideas on that noise anyone? as a bit of an edit the noise only goes away if u supress the throttle quickly...then comes back when you let go..I dont want to drive it incase ive messed something up which could cause further damage

well x3 or 4 on the paint thing. when we fire up our buggies after a fresh build we get that burning paint smell off of headers and block for about the first 3 running hours.

of course its only really strong for the first 45 minutes or so but it takes a while to completely go away.

greasy hand prints and finger prints on exhaust will also smoke for a little bit.

as for the squeal, i think i can imagine the sound you're describing sort of like a high pitched electrical short/buzz/screech type sound?

but as far as the source?

see if you can FEEL where its coming from and if you can see if it's possible to "move" the problem.

for instance if it's coming from an injector area you could try removing that injector and switching it with another.

if the problem moves with it, it's obviously the injector (for some odd reason!) if it doesnt move you've got problems beyond my knowledge.

where abouts you live? washington?

i suppose it's possible also to have a bad fuel pressure regulator?

what year is it? my regulator is up front by the 1&2

yeah ive attempted moving the injectors around and checked them...nothing made a difference so possibly not coming from them...it wouldnt make sense anyways because i didnt even touch anything to do with the fuel system...i just used a flex joint to get at the bolts then set the intake manifold ontop of the valve cover while i did it. but the noise has actually changed... first of all the check engine light went off and never came back on...and mechanically i cant find anything seriously wrong with it and i needed to go to school anyways so ive been driving it around quite a bit, so then retorqued the bolts last night, i was checking things out again this evening and it seems to have turned into something closer to a fast ticking sound... may or may not have had to do with me re-tightening...but i never had anything like this before i put the new header on... lol its definitely beyond my knowledge because the sounds just dont make sense to anything that i couldve done wrong with installing a header... ah well i need to find myself an exhaust shop to fab me a downpipe now so ill see if theyve heard of anything like it...and to scan and check for those throw codes for whatever was settin off that check engine light...

and i live in canada, just north of toronto fyi

did you put the header on upside down?

did you put the header on upside down?
OOOOOoh, so it isnt a ram air intake when installed that way?:jester:
Did you check the header for straightness or to see if it was twisted? Also, are you sure you were sure to scrape all the old gasket out of the way and check to see how well the header lined up with the ports. Sometimes headers will be off so far that they barley catch the head at one part of the port opening, allowing a leak.

yup scraped off the old gasket on the intake and the head and gave it a light sanding...everything was perfectly straight and smooth...

"OOOOOoh, so it isnt a ram air intake when installed that way?"
haha no...i didnt put it on upside down :P...and i was pretty certain that it lined up well..although the header ports just by eyeing it seemed larger than the head ports but I didnt think it wouldve made a difference because of the directional flow of the air.... could this sound im describing even be coming from a leak? thanks for the replies

positive the noise isnt coming from a pully bearing or the harmonic balancer rubbing the timing cover?
