Electric supercharger?!?!

Everything else seems to make sense, but that one doesn't compute.

On the window tinting, check local laws. I don't know about where you are but some states do not like the front windows tinted so dark. Roll those windows down if you come to Vermont or you'll get a ticket.

Think hair dryer...but for your car.

Get rid of it. It proabably causes you to lose more power from the electrical draw than you gain from the "forced" induction.

That thing advertises 120 max cfm. A stock 4.0 HO has a VE of 74% at the 5250rpm rev limiter...peak VE 77%, so the airflow at 5250rpm should be approximately 270cfm. All it would do is hinder your engine...

Ummm wow, interesting. Ok so it's not the one the dude up there posted....it actually gives quite a bit of hp from my butt dyno. I turn it off when I stop because it makes the engine pull and the brakes have trouble holding it sometimes. I need new brakes but still...

If it makes the engine pull it's increasing the idle speed too much. This may or may not mean anything with regard to power, but probably just means you're idling above the stall speed of your torque converter. If all you're doing is blowing in enough air to mess up the idle mixture, that's not useful power. A massive vacuum leak will make it pull too. In fact, a vacuum leak in your brake booster could be why the brakes don't hold too. Whatever the problem is it needs fixing.

Anyway, until you come up with some real data, I'm afraid you're going to get razzed here about your electric supercharger. Sounds like snake oil to me.

dzolcali
August 15th, 2006, 13:34
lol...it works better on the highway and through first and second gears when I mash out on it. It's not a cheap one like the guys are posting, I didn't buy this either it came with the vehicle but the guy who had it on there worked at some performance tuner shop, he has a s2000 but he would occasional drive his jeep to street races and he said he needed to add that on there to keep up with the tuners. I beat a tuner the other day who was trying to peel out on me, shit was funny too. Anyways it's a bigger unit and has a pretty good size motor on it, ideally a electric supercharger could be nice doesn't suck power off your belts and if you can generate maybe 3-5psi it's def worth it. I know a nice electric leaf blower would give you insane power compared to a belt driven super charger.

I'm coming from a turbo charged all wheel drive import car so I def can tell you the extra bit of air the super charger is blowing is helping the engine pull when I drive. The brakes are just bad on this thing the rotors are old and the pads are very worn.

good news though, I installed the arb bull bar today....looks handsome, I am going to tkae it back offa nd wire the lights up when I get more time but for now I can pass NC inspection so i'm happy :)

Okay man, I need to see some pics of this supercharger set-up. Not to call you out, but just to try to figure out what the hell it is. I think I described up above the only 'electric' supercharger there is. And its not really electric, its belt driven, it just has a magnetic clutch so that it is not functioning at idle. It can be rigged up to be switched on and off, but normally its automatic.

If you are describing one of those simple electric "blowers" that have been advertised on TV and are all over eBay, those are definitely crap as has been proven time and again. It would be hard to tell if there is an increase according to your butt-dyno though, because your butt-dyno has never recorded a baseline level since you purchased the vehicle with it attached, right?

Your leafblower comment does make me raise an eyebrow though as well...

it's got an on/off switch under the dash that I can tell the difference with it off and with it on...the only hindering thing I can gthink of is that the jeep functions full power with the thing on...and half power with it off... but honestly it's a six cylinder with some good torque, I had a vortec v6 s10 with tight suspension and nice rubbers I dunno what the number comparison is but the s10 is very similar to the jeep without the charger turned on...I dunno the kid told me it wasn't a cheap ebay thing..who knows he is shady anyways. oh yeah I resent that mark about the champpion plugs and pylon wipers...reason being, I am in school and I take marketing classes left and right and almost anyone knows a thing or two about marketing brand names are propaganda...with the spark plugs it may be debateable...but with the wipers...really now, it rains like every 2-3 weeks here at most...LOL the chances of me needign like triple blade wipers is ridiculous and even if I had them the rain would have to be some effing rain, I used to drive around without wipers and I got stuck in a snow storm without wipers and had to drive 1 1/2 hours without wipers...so I would go so far as to say that wipers are the least of my purchase worries I just need my shit to be legal so I can drive it on the streets ;)

Also, on a side note...it's a ford aspire 95, they are dangerous never borrow one even if your jeep is down like I did. It's not worth dying when the brakes lock up and the little bugger slides 30 feet with hardly any momentum to begin with.

tommorow when it's daylight I will try to snap some pictures, but I also get my windows tinted tommorow and pick up my tires and a buncha other stuff so I hope I can get around to it before i go to work. I got the camera though. Ok so heres my leaf blower idea, you guys know what a electric leaf blower feels like when you turn it on...it pushes your hand back a little...those suckers have serious air power, sucking and blowing out nice cool hard pushing air. So my idea is to mount one with a tube, put the blower down somewhere under the engine so it can suck up some cool air and not hot engine air. then run the hose up through the engine, and wire the blower to run when the engine is on at a sorta idle speed, and increase the speed of the blower as you press the gas, thus creating a sorta turbo effect. either that or have it switch on at a certain rpm but that might cause some serious power outta nowhere and make your car jerky. The only thing I can't figure out is how to draw enough power to run one of those...maybe a buncha batteries connected together in the trunk, then have some sorta alternate generator for them to keep them powered? I dunno any ideas I can almost gaurantee a leaf blower would make some serious hp.

LOL dammit...if I had a donar car I would do it and it would be boss. Allz I know is my electric leaf blower is mo'fackin powerful and last time I checked most superchargers belt driven only spurt out a whoppin 5psi maybe 6, I could be wrong but thats what I heard...my tsi was pushing 8psi and that was surely enough to make a difference. Don't get me wrong but I think a leaf blower could make some serious power in a catruck. Put the filter on the bottom of the leaf blower, connect a tube and run it up to the throttle body, I dunno...seriously it may be ghetto but that shit sounds like it could really work. Maybe someday I will be graced with a beater car other than my DD that I can try it on.

video of a honda with a leaf blower I believe it jumps about 15horsepower..not sure yet, then they put it on NOS
after that it's a 93 sonoma with a blower going from 177 stock, to 222 hp on the second pull...so I think this is good evidence that a leaf blower can do more than dry hair.

heres a guy claiming .5 off his 1/4 mile time with a leaf blower supercharger, it's probably not even working at full power because he is using a cheezy car inverter.
http://www.cardomain.com/ride/392492

you see the reason the leaf blower isn't working for these other people is because they aren't getting enough volume on the blower tube...I know this from experience, I used to inflate paintball bunkers with a leaf blower...if you used a long tube the bunker would inflate super fast because it would allow the blower to send a flow of air down the column. But if you took the tube off and put the blower right up to the hole it wouldn't hardly do anything, you need a long tube and cold air, the leaf blower should be about to put out 135-200mph wind which should be nice for the engine to suck in :)

With regard to the leaf blower idea, or any such scheme, I'm not saying it won't work, but you should remember that you need both volume and pressure. Most small fans of the sort used in electric superchargers are glorified bilge blowers that will not put out their rated volume against any kind of head. In fact, most will impede the flow of air into the engine instead.

An XJ engine displaces 4 liters. Since it's a 4 stroke cycle, that means that in two revolutions it sucks in approximately 4 liters of air at atmospheric presssure. A meaningful boost must provide more than that volume of air at above atmospheric pressure. Your Jeep sucks up about 70CFM at idle.

Most estimates I've seen suggest that for meaningful boost from an electric supercharger you'd need about 12 kilowatts input, or about a 1000 amp motor. You can get something for less, of course, but I'm guessing that most of the effect, if there is one, is from messing with the fuel air ratio, rather than providing real forced induction boost. There is one electric supercharger called "E-Ram" which uses an axial flow fan, and claims to get 1 PSI boost from 60 amps of motor power at full throttle. Note that according to the Eram folks, it works only at full throttle. At any other time it's not doing its job, just screwing around with the mixture, which is why properly turbocharged engines have waste gates. Also, of course, that 60 amp load would be a bit much to run continuously. If yours is one of these, it might actually be giving you a little boost, but if it's running at idle, it's installed wrong.

Rob Mayercik
August 16th, 2006, 09:56
...At any other time it's not doing its job, just screwing around with the mixture, which is why properly turbocharged engines have waste gates...

At the risk of being picky, I'd like to point out that not all "properly" turbocharged engines have wastegates: engines with variable-geometry turbos (like my TDI) don't have one, since it isn't needed. The vanes are simply shifted into a low-boost or no-boost angle.

Yes, NC did shit for flight. You guys had a nice place to use as a runway, don't act like you can claim the Wright brothers. OH is responsible for manned flight, all the research and construction was done here, by two native Ohioans. Every time I see an NC license plate that pisses me off.

I totally agree with you on the cali thing though.
like the ARB, that's nice.
Looks like overall your XJ is in great shape.
I think you should try taking out the electric motor and just run it with the cone filter.
I think the big difference in power you see is because when that motor is off it's a serious obstruction to airflow. When it's on it's probably no better than stock, maybe even worse.

I always pick up. Too far out for delivery :)

Search d44 or look. There's no way to tell without looking.

Who knows. It might have been doing something at WOT. It needs a clutch or waste gate for idle, though (or just a relay tied to throttle position [manifold pressure preferred]). Anyway, it wasn't made for that. Also, you might want to fab up a bracket for it. It looks like it's just flappin' in the breeze there.

BTW. FYI. CPAP is Constant Positive Airway Pressure. A low pressure, high volume blower to pevent beathing occlusion during sleep: aka, Sleep Apnea.

Dollars to donuts you don't have a D44 on a 96. If you have ABS it's likely a D35 and if no ABS a Chrysler 8-1/4. But you'll just have to get down and look.

If you have a factory tow package, you will have, for one thing, a Mopar Class III receiver hitch. If it's not a Mopar, the only way you'll have the factory package is if a previous owner unaccountably canned the Mopar hitch and bought a different one. The other visible sign is a transmission cooler. If you have just the usual in-radiator heat exchanger, you didn't get the tow package. If you have the factory Class I bumper hitch, you didn't get the tow package either, though you did get a very robust hitch.

Quick way to distinguish rear ends: take off a hubcap and look at the depression at the end of the axle. Dana has a figure 8 kind of depression, pinched in the middle. Chrysler has no pinch in the middle. Think of it as a rectangle with the short sides bulging out.

Another thing to look at. check out the top of the pumpkin, where the casting of the pumpkin makes the transition toward the axle tube. On a D35 there is definite webbing at the corners, and on that webbing, if it isn't horribly rusted, you should see embossed on one side, the DANA-in-a-diamond logo, and on the other, "35C."

The 29 spline 8.25 (you have 27 spline shafts) and 44 can be compared very closely with the difference mostly being the stonger 8.25 housing.
There is a hot debate about this and can be found through a simple search.
I would run 32"s on that 27 spline reliably, any day of the week.
Hell, I bash my transplanted 8.25 though BIG technical rocks and it has held up flawlessly.

anyways heres some more pics :)http://i8.tinypic.com/2564a6g.jpg

dzolcalidude, It is most certainly an 8.25 with absolutely no room for error whatsoever. I will punch anyone in the throat if they say otherwise...

:D

In regards to the strength issue, as stated, the d44 and 8.25 are quite comparable, however the 8.25 is a c-clip axle, meaning that if you break an axleshaft, its possible that the whole kit and kaboodle (wheel, drum and axleshaft) could come sliding out while you're rolling over some obstacle. A disc-brake conversion will fix that quickly though...

god i'm so stoked now that i know I got a 8.25, I hope it doesn't go to my head LOL...somebody bust my bubble real fast so I can get back to earth.
Started to install a subwoofer today, JL w3 old skool style in a custom built box with a plexi window on oneside, neon tubing inside, I plan on changing that out for a blue tube however, and the box needs to be seals a little better around the hole where the wire comes out. Other than that I have to figure out where to wire the rca type chords into my stereo, hope everything works out ok though.

lol is there any slang words for a chrysler 8.25 I'de like to pimp my ride out with some slang 8.25 stuff...maybe some custom chrome letters on the back that say 8.25

Well to burst your bubble, you only have the 27 spline 8.25, not the 29.
The 29 is the one thats comparable in strength to the 44, not yours. Not that the 8.25 you have isnt strong, I'd comfortably run 35's on it any day.
But hell, who am I to talk, I'm still running 33's on my d35 :D

Anyway...got any pics of the sub box?

dzolcali
August 20th, 2006, 19:31
I'll try for tommorow...it's a clean looking box I built for an S10 I used to own...originally it was a two sub box fitted the whole back side of of a single cab sdime...then I decided I wanted some more room on the dirvers side, so I just chopped it down the center, plugged the big ole hole with some thick plexi, ran a neon in it and re-carpeted it...looks good for a custom job I think. Anyways I'll take some snaps when the final product comes along
anyone here running side vents in their fenders i'm going to the junk yard tommorow to scrounge up some I think it would be neat to have some rough looking side vents in the fenders.

so I hooked up the jl 12" w3 today, something is going on wrong it's pulsing (not to the music) I've swapped the wires back and forth on the postive negative for the speakers and the same results occurred...the only thing I can think is that theres a remote wire I hooked to a 12volt plug, perhaps thats causing some sorta problem? I can't imagine what would make it pulse like this, I know my battery and ground are connected right at least.

Beej
August 21st, 2006, 14:26
Not sure about the pulsing, but here's how I've always wired amps and subs:

Positive wire from the battery to the pos terminal on the amp. Good idea to have an inline fuse there, 30A is normal. Use a nice heavy gauge wire for this.
Negative/ground wire from some point in the sheetmetal close to the amp to to the negative/ground terminal on the amp. Closer to the amp, the better. Use a nice heavy gauge wire for this.
Remote wire on the back of your stereo head to the remote wire on the amp. This allows the amp to turn on only when your stereo is on. If your head unit does not have a remote wire, you can connect the remote on your amp to your ignition. I've never had to do this, but you can google amp wiring and find directions.
Stereo (2-channel) amps can be connected to two speakers/subs or can be bridged to connect to a single sub. Mono amps have only one output and run a single sub. Connect the speaker wires to the speaker being careful not to mix them up.
RCA cable(s) from the amp is/are run to the head and connected to the jacks there. If there is no RCA out on the back of your head, you will have to use the rear speaker wires on the back of your head and run them to the speaker inputs on the amp (usually right next to the RCA jacks on the amp). Do not run speaker wires into RCA cables via splicing, or vice versa. This will damage your amp, head, or both.
Last thing to be connected should be the positive wire on the battery terminal with no fuse in the inline fuse holder. After the cable is attached to the battery, put a fuse in and you are good to go. I've done every vehicle I've ever owned like this and I've never had a problem yet...

well I did basically everything you did except I ran the remote to a switch thats connected to a constant power fuse in the fuse box...when I turn the switch on the sub comes on, but it' just goes "bump bump bump bump bump" over and over again like it's pulsing. I really have no clue whats up with that, I guess it's possible the amp is fried? or maybe I overlooked something in the install. I have hooked subs up before and never had this issue.

ok so i had a nice chrome audiobahn amp with the flames on it and the blue lights and all that jazz. It worked great and never overheated. then one day I decided my subwoofers should power my bass guitar. so i gutted out my bass guitar amp and took the head unit out, then took the system out of my s10 and wired everything up all crazy...it looked like it would work. then we plugged it into the wall with a string attatched because we weren't too sure and we were gonna pull the plug out from a safe distance if shit went crazy. On with the switch and a blue lightening bolt type thing shot outta something, the whole house's power went dead within miliseconds...the amp caught fire and was smoking...other than that nothing happened. We gave it a proper burial in the local dump. 12vdoes not = 120v :)

your other amp frying had nothing to do with grounding, it was another issue altogether. Car amps require ~12 volts DC, you hit it with 120 volts AC.

To avoid killing yourself in the future I suggest you familiarize yourself with the following terms:

Voltage
Amperage
Current
Watts
AC
DC
ground

I'll hug a XXXXing tree dammit, and it doesn't matter, because if your going to make fun of that, chances are your not friendly and you and I won't remember our interactions together via web or w/e in less than a month, and if we do, chances are we are friends and friends usually don't connect on differences...occasionally but not usually. damn I had a stressful day, why does anger follow stress...or frustration spawn such horrible feelings of hatred towards minimal points of interest in the universe.

the critizism is from a lack of self confidence scrappy it's ok...people tend to shun those they do not understand, thus the entire war in iraq, racism, sexism, social bias, economical misproportions, the list goes on. If I explained to you the depths of my knowledge I think many people would become lost for words and most probably loose interest in daily activity. It's good to be dumb, thats why I drink alcohol everyday to kill as many brain cells as possible that way I don't have to think about the above things, but theres somedays when you wake up at 6:30 to someone screaming at you calling you a lazy bastard child that needs to get up and go do this and that and take care of this and do that...and etc...and you are screaming inside for sleep because they were keeping you up all night banging on your door and telling you you were a lazy bastard yada yada...you just snap and start wondering why are you here...why are you letting someone else who doesn't know their asshole from their elbow cause you to be so stressed...and what does it all matter...it doesn't it doesn't matter if your a doctor or a lawyer, or a mechanic, a bum, a XXXXing girl or a boy, you just exist and then cease to exist and thats the fundamentals of thinking is trying to dig deeper beyond that question of why, and figure out what why means...its' a man made word that gives promise of an answer, or possible answer. The answer is manifested just like the question through the individual seeking information, do a search, on the meaning of life....you will find various reasons and none of them collaborate. Lets stick to jeeps, it is simple and understandable, sorry to get off topic occasionally smart remarks set me off because I try to avoid conflict with people, it's the more ignorant thing to participate in. Roids don't make you crazy scrappy...and psychologist don't know a whole bunch about much more than the rest of us...generally speaking. I can tell you the day the earth will end...if that makes me crazy so be it :)

xj, cool post, if you smoke weed...umm I guess thats cool I don't really get into it too much, i've dabbled in things but it's not really good for me, makes me too paranoid about cops and what not.
something interesting about weed and other mind altering drugs.
the typical human experiences the world in 15frames per second...roughly, think about the fps on your computer.
when using marijuana it increases your fps to 20 frames per second, because you are judging your usual time frame based on the 15 frames per second, yet, you are actually taking in 20, it seems as though time has slowed down. Although this doesn't give you spidey senses, because your reaction time is still slower. Mushrooms increases fps to around 100, thus the "trip" takes a long time, when in fact it's only 8 hours.
and LSD has been claimed to increase up to 1000 frames per second....thats just scary.
Can you imagine though, perhaps the visuals you experience during a "trip" could actually be real though, for instance something appears to be moving, or sorta waving or w/e happens during a trip, and all things are vibrating, now you can see the vibration with your newly found super fps vision.
It also explains light trails. As far as I know it's similar with your ears as well. I haven't really searched much into why you get so hungry when your high though.

It was all fun, at first. You were kinda cute in your seeming naivete'. A few were willing to try to help you out. Soon, however, a severe ignorance began to rear it's ugly head (e.g., the amp incident). Once it became apparent that the issue was ignorance and not mearly inexperience, you became a target.

nah the amp thing was really just I dunno exactly. a friend and I decided to "rig" something up and hope it worked. It's funny too because he was an eletrical engineer...LOL after we did it he was like...oh yeah 12v 120v etc..
if you saw us in the garage you would understand we were def. sure something bad was going to happen so it wasn't an accident, if it was an accident I wouldn't have had a rope tied to the plug and been standing like 15 feet away and poking the "on" button with a broom. The burst of electricity was crazy and the power went out and we both were like "umm ok i guess that doesn't work" lol
nvm, i thought people would laugh, not start a flame war. By the way, flame typically means "gay" for those homophobes out there...perhaps rethink flaming in threads.

Its a well-documented fact that meth-heads take apart and recreate dozens of non-sensical technical gadgets on a daily basis. Combined with the rest of the prose you have spewed upon the net, I've come to the conclusion that you are the poster child for meth-heads.

On that note, your frames per second analogy up there is more bogus than a carbon-fiber driveshaft on an XJ. Since all animals live in REALITY and REALITY occurs at what could only be described in "technical terms" as an infinite sampling rate, and we are animals too, no drug can provide the experience you described above. Never could, never will.

Stating those bits only proves you have no real world experience with any drug other than the aforementioned methamphetamine. And I would venture a guess that your cook doesn't know what he's cooking...

Perhaps I "babble" because you don't understand me, thats fine. The things stated above about the fps, analogy is indeed true, you can research for yourself if you disagree but do not discredit my information with no prior information on the topic. Your definition of "reality" is lack luster and too simple to fit into the world. If reality was the same for all people...the world would have zero problems, no conflicts etc...in your reality, I don't make sense, in my mind and some other educated individuals on the subjects, I do...Posting round the clock, yes I have insomnia, usually due to thinking about the universe, celestial eqautors, and various other forms of natural phenomenon that we all experience differently. If you need sources of documented proof about the above statements I will be happy to give you various authors and links to their publishings if you wish, it's really quite simple if you want to compare the human brain to a monkey, perhaps you are a monkey, but I myself cherish the astounding potential of the human brain and it's capacity, or lack there of in some of your cases. given an average of 10% brain capacity, when flooded with serotonin, endorphins and other such chemicals the brain can easily increase it's capacity to process and think up to around 35%. Thats cool if he is a pyschologist, I don't know why he would accuse me of being a meth head, you think he would lay down some factual information to disprove my statements, but no, just some bit about "sample" intake, and then "your a meth head"
I think that alone justifies my responses. I have read several works and been told by professors from universities the above statements hold true, perhaps not exactly in my wording/analogy but I think people get the picture. well, I have to go to work in 15 minutes, which kinda bites because I will be there till 12am. I am not solidifying any image, it's the internet...you can go tell your wife and kids about "this guy online named dzolcali...he's such an idiot" I promise you it won't offend me. But the universe is big, if you haven't thought about it, perhaps you are just as naive...information as a whole is nothing really...bits of stuff that can't be defined, points in space. Everyone is so smart and so intelligent online...but why, what does it do for you to be smart, or dumb. Ignorance is bliss...I prefer to be happy over sad, currently I am not happy mainly because of thinking too much, and it's hard to just abandon that train of thought because someone says "Hey your f*cking wierd" except if any of you met me in person you would be like "wow this guy is completely normal, smiling, happy, confident" but inside i'm just waiting to see some chaotic explosion or just die in general to see whats after death. Think about time...I don't believe in it. If you can't go back into the past how can you go into the future...time doesn't exist, you only judge it and based your life off the decay of things, perhaps that isn't really decay though, it's all just atoms afterall, meshing togther and changing always. I mean you say you know this, and you know that, and yada yada, but what does anyone know. Some people believe in existentialism, some christianity, etc.. Does anyone even know where the names for the days of the week came from, pagans, yet sunday is a day of worship, it's so crazy that on "sunday" you go to church, when in fact, it was a day to worship the sun originally...then you got, monday or "moonday", saturday "saturnday" and thursday derived from "thor" or the god of Jupiter. How hypocritical of people, but we are all hypocrites myself included, I'm self first, yet i'm selfless...it's two different mind sets that accompany my personality. And I know a lot of my text seems like mindless ramble, I feel the need not to be bound by modern rules and regulations of what communication has to be, sure if i'm writting something important and it will effect my life, i'm going to make it perfect english. But online...run-on sentences are sweet, and anything else is fair game as well because it's the net and you guys know what i mean when I say something, maybe the errors will make you read it twice and try to interpret it, instead of just skim over it and think of some clever rebuttle before you actually realize what I typed. Work time :)
