Only 3 weeks left Cody? That's awesome.
I started out in the Shipyards and learned a trade. Not a bad place to start.

Stay away from the painters(no offense Pat). You might have to start out as a general laborer, but try to get in the mechanical, outside machinists, or shipwrights. Those skills will cross-over better to other fields/industries, even automotive to some extent. If you are into welding, the shipyard is a good place to learn. Being a welder/fitter is a tough trade in a yard, and is something your not likely to do the rest of your life. There are also pipe-fitting and electrical shops if you're interested. Overall, I think the shipyard is a good place to pick up a skill set, and get paid a decent wage. You can sort of pick out what you like best, and get into that department. I won't lie to you though, it can be a pretty sucky, hard job sometimes, and usually in the crappiest weather. Getting the On-the-Job training worked well for me, and I used it to get a great job in the power industry a few years later.

I told him I'd go to get in the "demo" side. Nothing easier than being "inside" tearing crap apart. :)
Cody- I do like Jeremy's advice though, find something you can do in and outside the shipyard.

Stay away from the painters(no offense Pat).In light of this self-portrait, I really don't think you need to apologize to Pat:

All those chemicals start to effect your brain, then you start talking about Gnomes in your transfer case.
Seriously Cody, do you have any education allowance from the military? Getting some schoolin' would be my best advice, then you can skip some of the B.S., and be somebody's boss.

try Safe Boats International out of Port Orchard. They have the contract for rbs boats that the USCG uses, as well as many international countries. the factory is sweet, people seem to like working there too. they will definately be around for a very long time.

Or Aluminum Chambered Boats in Bellingham. They have contracts with the Army, Marines, and Navy. Clean work on new stuff. http://www.acbboats.com/
All American Marine, also in Bellingham, is a great place to work. I worked there for about a year before I got my current job. 40 to 80 foot aluminum hi-tech catamarans. Great people, work environment. I especially enjoyed installing four 800 horse-power computer controlled Detroit Diesels(not the old school ones) in a tiny hull, and making it all work with Hamilton jets. Oh....they haul a$$ too! http://www.allamericanmarine.com/

I've heard nothing but good things about either of those companies. They would be well worth a shot.

Alright Cody!! It's a wonderful day, that last day in your shop(or office). It's very surreal though, make sure and get phone numbers and emails from anybody you wanna keep in touch with, cuz it's easy to forget about that when all you wanna do is go home for good. Take it easy.
