I have a 96 XJ 4.0 HO. I was wondering what the stock rear axle for that year was.

It could be a Dana35, or a Chrysler 8.25"
The 8.25" may have either 27 or 29 splines.

How would I be able to tell by looking at it? The reason I ask is because when I order my lift from RE, I have to specify what rear axle I have.

Dana35 is round, 8.25" is flat on the bottom.

There are a few ways. Most Dana axle the cover is stamped Dana. Also there should be an ID tag. You can also contact a dealer and they with the VIN they will be able to tell you. Here is also a link that might help.

ring gear size, but mostly it's in the tubes and shafts. The reason RE wants to know is so they send you the right u-bolts, as the 8.25 tubes are larger.
the 35 was used in XJs with ABS.
