This years NWFest will be another great one. Great wheeling, good times, and family friendly fun. It is being held the weekend of June 27th-29th, at Naches, Washington. I will be there early Thursday, to claim camp. So, show up from Thursday on.
There are trails for all kinds of rigs, from stock to heavily modified. We will need a few trail leaders, that know the area, and can lead different groups. Ill dig up some maps and make copies for everyone to have.
It is open to members and non members. You have to be at least 18 years of age to attend(NAXJA insurance reasons). All attendies must sign a liability waiver, including passengers. Passengers do not have to be of 18 years old to ride along.
Your rig must abide by the NAXJA bylaw guidelines, moreso the Sponsered Events and Trips section, Article IX.
http://www.naxja.org/html/bylaws.htm
Dinner will once again be sponsored by John Mathews of Auburn Car Repair and Offroad. Im sure it will be the great chicken and his wife's awesome patato salad. Ill be bringing soda pop, chips, and plates. If you would like to help out, bring what you can, it is appreciated. We will need a headcount on this, so we will know how much food to bring.
For the raffle, it will be the same as last years. Once again, Auburn Car Repair and Offroad is going to donate some prizes for the raffle. If anyone would like to donate anything, let one of the chapter officers know, or post up.
Hope to see everyone there!

Cool, I'm in. I know the Naches area relatively well (mostly the Manastash side) but I'd be willing to lead a trail if necessary. Not sure what you guys will need food wise, throw some ideas out and I'll see if I can help as we get closer. Should still be some snow at higher elevations, that could be fun.
Looking forward to it.... :)

Im thinking Long Meadow, across the bridge that goes over the river on the left headind down Little Naches Road. Or by the river right there. Just to keep the costs down of having to buy a NW forest pass or paying each day to camp.
We will know for sure shortly.

There are NO fees associated. Its free to attend. No Forest Service Pass Required, but its always good to have them, just incase.
The camping part is still going to be figured out. Im thinking Long Meadow. Or possibly Kaner Flats Campground. There are no hookups for trailers(power, sewer, water). There are well hand pumps, toilet vaults, and dumpsters though.

You do need a forest pass if you're leaving a vehicle parked in camp all day. We had a ranger come by and ticket our tow rigs a couple years ago, we had the forest passes in our trail rigs.
It took several phone calls and vouching for our club by our resident ranger contact to clear it up.

You can run most of the main trails with 31"s and some driving skill when it's dry out. If there's snow or more likely mud on the trails, you'll want a locker in the rear at least.

The vast majority of the trails in the area can be run with a stock XJ. There is very little that can not be run with an XJ on 33's open/open.
This event is more about the group dynamics than it is about what Jeeps could complete what trails ;)
I hope you decide to come along.

Mine's 23 years old with 2.8 liters of POWER to pull 4.0's back to camp, open diffs and 32 inch tires. I have been in snow up to the door handles, mud over the hood, logs three inches into the rockers (dents to prove it) and it still goes.maybe a bit slower than some, but it goes. ya don't need to spend big bucks to have some good fun. And if you get hung up, let the guy with the $1500 winch or $25 dollar strap show off and pull you out. It's all part of the good time. Every rig that shows up started out as a stock vehicle One fella, I think Carl is his name, just adds skid plates and goes on all the trails. The more goodies you add means the more stuck you will get.

When the trails are dry, most can be done open/open. When we're going to be there for NWFest, it's going to be a whole different ball game. That being said, there will be trails for every skill level.

Camping will be in what I believe to be called "Long Meadow". Up Little Naches Road, left @ the large concrete bridge over the river. Follow for a couple hundred yards, as the road starts to curve left and goes from paved to gravel, there's a sharper left that heads into an open field and the road is a loop, we'll be somewhere down there :) NW Forest Pass is not required @ Naches.

jason,
takin white pass should be the fastest, unless you can cut partway through the nat. park and it dumps ya out in either packwood or randall (cant remember). thats generally the way i head home from lewis on weekends, takes me roughly 5 hours, but thats only cuz i live all the way SE of the yak.
just dont take i5 down till u hit 410, that takes too long. go the backway down thru spanaway (yelm, roy, mckenna, etc. .) then go that way. I dont have a roadmap handy otherwise i could tell ya better.

Well, you would head north on Interstate 5. Take the SR512 exit toward Puyallup. Follow it until you have to merge onto SR167. Then get onto SR410, east toward Yakima. Drive for a good hour and a half, until you come up to Little Naches road. Take a left down it. Once you come to a bridge crossing the Naches River, follow the NAXJA signs to camp.
Alternate directions are, if you can take Interstate 5 north, you can follow SR12 east, but you'd have to backtrack some to get to Little Naches.
All spares you could think of, that you can get your hands on. Axle shafts front and rear, a hub, various engine electronics, driveshaft u joints, fluids, ect.. most the time anyone would have something that can help get you back home.

Does anybody know when Chinook pass opens this year? I am pretty sure the Naches trail will be buried pretty deep in snow near the summit, even at the end of June, so I am going to try to drive up and over 410 through Mt. Rainier Nat. Park and swing into camp from that direction. :helpme:

WSDOT says Chinook pass is still scheduled to open for Memorial Day Weekend. The Naches trail does not open from the West side until July 15th.

Thanks, John. I guess I'll keep my eyes on the DOT website and plan on going up and over the pass (Chinook that is) and wheel the east side of Naches. I am coming from the Lake Tapps/Buckley area so normally it is not that far when you can get over Naches. There is also a network of Forest Service roads that criss-cross the trail, so I might be able to make it through that way. Should be a blast!

I limped home from our 1st North West Fest a few years ago. Clogged radiator, no altinator, dead battery. Wasn't that bad, even my youngest daughter handled it well. The last few years there have been far fewer broken parts :hang:
If I remember correctly, we (the whole group) had two broken front axle shafts, 1 rear axle shaft, 1 front driveline, 1 radiator, 1 altinator, several bumps and bruises. What a great weekend that was!!
In all honesty, most of the group drive their wheeling rigs and just a few trailer. Between the group there are very few spare parts and little that we can't fix in an emergency.

There's no 'insurance' for anything but liability coverage for the Officers, which is pretty much a 'SHTF, one time use' type of thing.
The age concern is simply a judgment call by the BOD and is not covered under the By-Laws, with exception to Club membership.

So it sounds like there's a loop hole? I have a stock XJ (Bought it 2 days ago) and want to do some trails other than the local stuff, I thought this thing may be an opportunity to get out on something different (assuming there's easy trails) in addition to all the other benefits.
Is there maybe an exception out there that could be made with the right forms?

It's public wheeling on public lands, legally you can bring your rig out and run the trails. You'll be required to run 100 yards behind the main group and we can't acknowledge your presence except in a case of life or death emergency, and you will be shunned to the outer glow of the fire while in camp.

Plan on filling your tank on the way (Yakima) as well as bringing everything you plan on needing with you.
If you need more gas or groceries they are available reasonably close.

Hey guys,
Add three more rigs two the list! So a total of four more people. My friend will bring his XJ. I, and another will bring our Samurais. We will plan on being there from the 27th through the 29th. I live on Mayfield Lake just off of Highway 12. Should anyone be coming this way we would love to caravan over white pass. Let me know.

Gas is running from 4.13 to 4.29 in Naches. The cheapest in the area is in Union Gap at Costco. It was 4.02 a few days ago. The ARCO's are around 4.12 to 4.13 so they are not much better than the Shell in Naches. As much as I love Whistlin Jacks stay away from them for gas if possible. They were close to 4.50 last time I saw them(around 2 weeks ago). Of course everybody will be close to that so close to the 4th of July. :helpme:

I have a theory about small Mom and Pop c-stores located in out-of-the-way-places. If ya like em, BUY SOMETHING FROM THEM!!!!!! Or they may not be there next time you need what they are sellin. This is for fun gasparty1: , not go-to-work gas. Don't worry about a few extra bucks for a tankfull.:) :sunshine:

It costs me more than $220 to fill my tow rig! I don't think the few extra bucks to fill the Jeep at one station over a nother is a big deal (what......16 gal x .20 per gal more ~ $3.
The point about useing the mom and pop places is VERY true! What would you do if the gas wasn't available!!

I live here and do other business with them all the time. Believe me when I say they are not in any danger of going out of business. They have one of the best restaurants:chef: in the area (including Yakima) :loveu: and beautiful cabins along the river perfect for that romantic get away :kissyou: . All of this plus a lounge  and store. What more could you want? While they are a little out of the way they get a LOT of business year round from theYakima area. We are just replacing the snowmobiles and crosscountry skiers. If you want to give them a little extra for gas I'm sure they won't mind...but for those wanting to save a little money fill up before you get there and eat at the restaurant!!! It's well worth the money. :)

I built the '98 I picked up for $500. However I got an SYE in the mail today and got a wild hair I can have it done by Friday. I can't even seem to get the transfercase out without droppin the tranny.

Hey all, unfortunately Kyle and I had to blast off early this morning (Saturday) and couldn't stay for the rest of the event because of work. We had a great time and it was awesome getting to meet all of you. We saw some pretty sick ass jeeps and came home with a few ideas. I am looking forward to the next Naxja meeting. We came home with minimal trail damage, but it could be the mud and trail dust holding all together like glue. Thanks for the laughs and we'll see everyone next time!

Well, yes, but he didn't caravan up with us. The red late model from canadia was running lift blocks and on an obstacle totally blew them up and the rear axle broke free and took out the drive shaft. I just inspected the underside of the beast and discovered that i am missing a shim, leaf spring, both lift blocks and the bolts are trashed on my d44. Probably just a single spring, most likely the smallest one on the bottem, not the whole pack. Pretty easy to miss because you just think your lean is worse then before.

yeah, it was just the small bottom spring. i spent 3 hrs at the junk yard this morning hoping i could find any xj with a d44 and a lift to snag some parts, but all the d44's were gone and they didn't have anything i was looking for. i did escape with a BMW, VW and Mercedes emblem though. I decided to call it good and get rid of the other small spring and temporarily run with 2" lift blocks to balance out the lift. The springs account for the actual lift though.

i appreciate it, but i don't think the stock stuff will work with the lift. What i thought was kinda weird though, was that the angled shims under the leaf springs are supposedly stock, but on my quest to find some, there are none to be found anywhere; not even on stockers.
Ba-Riedo
July 2nd, 2008, 23:55
Shims are not stock, but can be obtained very easily at most Offroad stores. Which jeep was yours (sorry I have forgotten) and how much lift are you running? I might have a spare bottem leaf of a rustys pack...

I didn't think the shims were stock, but I talked with a guy at one of the local 4x4 shops and he said they didn't carry them because they are stock and I would have to go to a place like Les Schwab or a junk yard to find one. My xj was the 89 custom camo with the 5.5" ruby express lift.

Les Schwab is hit and miss and you have to get somone that knows what they're talking about. 4x4 shops are the best bet I have found.
