Ignition Switch Issues (long)

This post is mostly to help anyone that comes across this particular
problem.

Jeep information: 87 Cherokee 4.0 Pioneer 5 speed with 212,000 miles
and sat for about 3 years with just the occasional start once in a
while. A couple of months ago I r/r some items so that I could get it
on the street again and so far so good.

I started having trouble with the ignition switch lock when trying to
turn off the motor. I would have to jiggle the key lock assembly in order for it
to rotate far enough so that I could get the key out.

One cold day in the teens I jump in to go to work and turn the key
and I get nothing but yet all the lights/buzzers/radio are working
just fine. No time to mess with it right then and jump in the truck
and head to work. that day at work I spent way too much time surfing
the internet looking for clues as to why this is happening. So that
evening I begin the process of diagnosing the problem. Wasnt getting
power to the starter. Figure it was an easy swap and it was the
original anyway, I might as well replace it if needed. Took it up to
the parts place and they tested it said it worked but usually they
draw about 11 amps and this one dropped to 1 after the initial load.
I figured ok, give me a new one. Put it in, try to start, no luck.

Next day I trace back to the starter solinoid right behind the
battery and replace it. Go to try and start it and at the very end of
the key throw it starts. which gets me to thinking it may be
something not under the hood and may be related to the Ignition
Switch Lock. Back to the parts store for a new Key lock and steering
wheel puller. Yank everything off and install the new Key Lock.
Assemble and drive it for a few days. Better, but not like it was.

Find a story on this site about the Ignition Switch that is located on
the steering column and that there is some adjustability in it. Now
those of you in the know probably have already figured this out, but
I dropped the column and got in there messing with the Ignition
Switch and the push rod that activates it and found that somehow it
got bound up. Lube everything up good and assemble and it is as good
as new.

Hopefully this helps someone else out there in the Jeep world when
they come across a situation similar. Oh and btw I have a starter
solinoid that is brand new for anyone who needs it since the
dealership wont take back electrical parts. I paid $40 but will sell
it cheaper just to make some of the money back and help someone along
the way.

Thanks for listening/reading.

Steve
