Timing Chain Noise at Cold Start

Need some help on a noisy timing chain.

Specs.: 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country 2wd
Mileage: 170k

Recently replaced my front crank seal and noticed a great deal of slack in the timing chain. Decided to replace with an OEM Cloyes timing chain since I was in there. Ever since replacement, the timing chain makes alot of slapping noise at very cold startup. Once warmed up, the chain noise goes away. Any ideas? Maybe an oiling issue at cold startup?

By the way, I did put the camshaft spring pin back in on replacement.

Did you replace the timing chain damper? It's ~$9 from AA.

I used the one already in there, in that, it did not show any significant damage. I oriented the narrow end the damper towards the timing chain. Is that correct? Also, what are the slots/circles for on the back of the damper?

Instead of making it solid they save a little material = $. If it's making as much noise as you say it's time to open 'er back up and see what's going on in there.

Yep, probably will have to. Just don't understand why it goes away after a couple of minutes idling after a cold startup in the morning.
