:flame: About two months ago, I made a 6 hour trip through the desert, My 1997 XJ ran a little warm but I kept going, I periodically checked under the hood, and everything seemed fine. When I got to my house, I opened the hood, and the upper radiator hose had a hole in it. So I put on a new upper radiator hose, and then I replaced the 185 thermostat with a 160, and a new cap. It runs cool almost always, unless I go over 60-65MPH. I took it up in the mountains this weekend where it was 110 degrees, and it continues to run about 215-225. I dont know what else to try, I flushed the radiator, and it doesnt leak? I am only running water for now, but it stays cool until higher speeds? Any advise would be great, I want it to stay below 200. Thanks for any words of wisdom. Chris

Install a new clutch fan, sounds like the one you have is just not working properly. Also check that the electric fan is running as well.

Run a 50/50 mix of coolant and water - not straight water.
Put the 195* thermostat back in where it's supposed to be.
Now listen to this next part very carefully:
The 4.0L engine is supposed to run at or near 210*!!

Exactly. I think your cooling system is working fine, especially if you're driving with the A/C on. In 110* weather, it's always gonna run a bit hotter, especially at highway speeds because of the sustained higher RPM. 225* is not too hot for an engine. Put the 195 stat back in there, you're actually running your engine too cool with the 160.

Thanks for the advice, but I dont have a/c, and the electric fan is working fine, I tried the 195 thermostat, and It runs way hot then. The electric fan is working fine, but it is possible that the clutch fan might be taking a crap. Thanks for the help, and I am well aware it is supposed to run at 210, but that is all the warmer I want it. Chris  :cheers:
