On the way home tonite after work I see a guy selling his 86 Cherokee Laredo, for $200.
2.8L V6 runs, not sure of milege, body is shot, drivetrain is there, 4x4 works, D35.
I have a 97 lifted and such... but am wondering if $200 is worth it to spend on a parts vehicle... will I get my money out of it part wise. I already need a new tierod (mines bent) and new around here is $100+ and wreckers won't sell used steering parts.
So in the opinion of those here is it worth the money, and what can I take from it that will make it worth it?
thanks

Personally, i'd skip on getting an 86 as a parts vehicle for a 97 XJ. Just my $.02.

You could buy it and part it out, scavenge what you can and junk the rest. You'll make back your 200 and you'll have spare wheels, some leaf springs, lights and crap. Although not much is going to be compatible between a 97 and an 86...

I kind of agree with him. About the only thing that would even interchange would be the stearing parts, stearing box (maybe), the rear axle (if you even have a D35), and the glass (except from the hatch).

this things a little too rough to DD, engine runs but not too smooth, usual Jeep traits, saggy rear end, body rust round the bottom edges and such. my thoughts were mainly towards the steering which should be the same, and after thinking about it I could also use to leafs to AAL to my 3" lift. cutting the old top leaf to go under my new top one. this one also has the scrap old gas tank skid (thin metal that wraps under the tank. I have a chrys 8.25, but yeah other parts may be found here n there for it. If it is still there tomorrow after I get back from work I'll go pick it up.
Granted its a running 4x4 Jeep thats been for sale for about 6 hours now at $200... if I was a kid round here I would have bought it up asap and had it written off by now!

What is this rust you speak of? I am unfamilar with this terminology :).
Unless you have a lot of free time on your hands, I would forget about it. There aren't that many similarites between the years to justify buying a 1986 XJ and even if you need a new tie rod, I wouldn't replace mine with a 20 year old unit.

Yes, yes, and yes.
$200 for a running xj is good in my opinon no matter what year. I picked up my parts jeep for a $100 and it didnt even run, or have shocks, thing bounced like hell. Anyways, back to the subject.. I really do think it's a good deal even if all you get off it is the tie-rod. You can then sell the tires and wheels for a $100, and anything else you sell will be profit.
You then can take little odds and ends for basically free.

Shoot you could make your money back plus some if you parted it out and put the parts on ebay.
