View Full Version : Pacer brand Fender Flares from Quadratec

Didn't want to go into too long of a "how to" but I just put some cheapo flares on from Quadratec (Pacer brand). I was very happy with the front ones because they mount with bolts and nuts, and to a flat surface, excellent for drilling. The backs were not so awesome and I'm not really happy with the final product. Since the fender was cut then pounded over, drilling into the surface was difficult and the instructions (which I only partially followed) tell you to drill the flare and fender at the same time...BAD IDEA. If the fender is not flat, the bit will move as you drill, thereby opening up the hole on the flare or completely ripping out. The rear also use self tappers (which can be good or bad, but mostly bad because the sheet metal is thin and the thread engagement is poor). I do NOT recommend these for the rear (if you do a snip then pound prior), but I do like the fronts.

Total cost $97 (get what you pay for).

How strict are the vehicle laws there in AZ? Are flares required or were these installed to clean things up a little (it looked pretty clean to begin with...)?

I can't speak to how the laws are, I've had the fenders trimmed for nearly a year and no hassle by the Fuzz. But anytime I hit mud or water, when I turned I'd get a fresh coat of mud all over my windshield and be temporarily blinded. In addition, I think you can see the vent in my hood, well that would get a nice dose of mud & water too. No trouble came of it, but may have after time.

Cherokees are registered as a station wagon here in AZ. As such, there are no laws for mud flaps or fendor flares. Those only pertain to Trucks and I think SUV's. Woundedxj would be the end source for that though.

Mudflaps only required for pickups, not SW or SUV.

Marshall, I used the same ones and agree with you- you get what you pay for. I used them to cover the welding along the edge.

Just out of curiousity, why only one hood vent? This is actually the first one I've seen like this (I know... I dont' get out much... LOL)

There were a couple things that contributed to one vent:
1. My driver's side motor mount was getting worn much faster due to the fact the hottest thing under the hood (exhaust manifold) was so close to it. I wanted to take the hot air out right where it originated and not bring it to the other side (since the only place I really see the value of the vent is during slow / crawling type trips).
2. There are a lot of electronics type bizness on the passenger side (alternator, distributor, plugs, starter, battery, etc.). I thought it'd be best to keep those as dry as possible.
3. A final, more inconsequential reason, was I didn't want to be cutting so much metal out of the hood.

ok, ok the real reason was that I am cheap and lazy, there I said it are you happy now?

Yes, sir. NOW I am happy! LOL

Makes perfect sense to me. Thanks for the info... darn, now I have to think about things and re-evaluate my life....

Here it is right out of the book itself

28-958.01 - Rear fender splash guards
A. A person shall not operate a truck, trailer, semitrailer or bus on a highway unless the vehicle is equipped with rear fender splash guards that comply with the specifications provided in this section.
B. The splash guards:
1. Shall be attached in a manner that prevents the splashing of mud or water on the windshield of other motor vehicles.
2. Shall extend to a length of not more than eight inches from the ground.
3. Shall be wide enough to cover the full tread or treads of the tires being protected.
4. Shall be installed close enough to the tread surface of the tire or wheel to control the side throw of the bulk of the thrown road surface material.
5. May be constructed of a flexible rubberized material.
6. Shall be attached in a manner that, regardless of movement either in the splash guards or the vehicle, the splash guards retain their general parallel relationship to the tread surface of the tire or wheel under all ordinary operating conditions.
C. This section does not apply to:
1. A vehicle commonly known as a pickup truck with a manufacturer's rating of three-quarter ton or less, except that this section applies if the pickup truck has been modified from the original bumper height design to raise the center of gravity of the pickup truck.
2. A truck tractor or converter dolly when used in combination with another vehicle.
3. A single axle trailer with fenders wide enough to cover the full tread or treads of the tires being protected and that extend to a length of not more than fourteen inches from the ground.28-958.01

Gramps is right on this one as if all of you look at your registration you will see 4DSW or 2DSW which means 4/2 door station wagon. So with the law above and the definition of our jeeps we do not need mud flaps or anything that covers the width or our tires on the fenders.

they don't look so bad. i prefer the clean look, but we build our rigs for function. if they are functional at keeping you vision clear they are beautiful!

as far as laws here in az. my tj's tires hang out 3 or 4" and i have never been pulled over. i have seen a lot of vehicles with tires completely outside the fender, even prerunner trucks drive past the police with no trouble. lucky for us this state is very lenient on vehicle enforcement.

I came here from pa where the vehicle code was very restrictive and the police loved to pull people over for the slightest infractions. i love my freedom here in arizona!

Thanks for the kind words. Yep, I'm all about functionality. My wife is a graphic designer, so you can imagine the conversations that occur. But yeah, cops in AZ are pretty cool, think most of them are outdoorsy types or just have better things to do than worry about fender flares.

Is the model info listed on your title or registration slip?
...........Then you'll have to know what the law is concerning mudflaps in ID.

Here is the law (I removed some sections that did not apply). It appears that as long as you have fenders that reach to within 20 inches of the roadway, you don't need mudflaps. See 1c. I don't work, and never have worked as an LEO in ID, so I don't specifically know how the laws are enforced.

49-949. REQUIREMENT AS TO FENDER OR COVERS OVER ALL WHEELS ON MOTOR
VEHICLES. (1) It shall be unlawful for any person to operate or move or any
owner to permit to be operated or moved, any motor vehicle, truck, bus,
semitrailer or trailer, upon any highway without having the vehicle equipped
with fenders or covers which may include flaps or splash aprons, over and to
the rear of wheels, as follows:
(c) Behind all wheels of every motor vehicle other than trucks, buses,
semitrailers, or trailers, the fenders or covers shall extend in full
width from a point above and forward of the center of the tire over and to
the rear of the wheel to a point that is not more than twenty (20) inches
above the surface of the highway, unless the bumper is a factory built
bumper fastened directly to the frame of the vehicle pursuant to factory
installation requirements;
(2) Fenders or covers, as used in subsection (1) of this section, shall
be deemed to be of sufficient size and construction as to comply with those
requirements if constructed as follows:
(a) When measured on the cross sections of the tread of the wheel or on
the combined cross sections of the treads of multiple wheels, the fender
or cover extends at least to each side of the width of the tire or of the
combined width of the multiple tires, as the case may be;
(b) The fender or cover is constructed as to be capable at all times of
arresting and deflecting dirt, mud, water, or other substance as may be
picked up and carried by wheels;

Hmmm... poop. Oh well. I wasn't planning on running fenderless. Just when I get around to painting the Jeep and trimming the flares this summer. But i've got my scooter to ride while the Jeep is being worked on =)

The flares look decent for the price. Definitely a good choice over bushcrackers.

I asked about the flare law because I've been pulled over four times in CA for having no mud flaps ( I was given a "fix it" ticket once out of those four), and the law includes fender flares in with the mud flaps. XJ's in CA are considered passenger vehicles, which makes it more challenging to lift them "legally" since the permissible frame height is less than a truck.

after this rainy winter i want fender flares to keep mud of the windows but like the picture in this thread shown only mud flaps will keep debris from getting kicked up, most of the action takes place where the rubber meets the terrain... Pacer makes a 4.5" wide that would pimp. I liked their cars back in the day too, didn't know a Pacer and performance were ever used in the same sentence until I researched flares.

Up here in Flagstaff we have so much snow that when it warms up and melts, I get a mixture of salt, cinder, water and who knows what else scattered along the entire rig. I can't drive down the roads without using my wipers ever few seconds. Not to mention I can't keep the rig halfway clean.

FYI; no salt is used as a de-icing agent in flag
