I just picked up a 96 4.0. The check engine light is on and when I try to retrieve the codes by turning ignition on/off 3 times no codes come up. Am I doing something wrong?

why not run by an autozone/advance and have them pull any codes?
i thought the 'pull-your-own-codes' was more complicated than ignition on/off 3 times....

I thought they could only do that with a 98 or newer? I just don't know.

96 is the first model year for obdII. you can do the key cycling trick, or just pull the codes with a scanner. scanner is much easier imo.
