View Full Version : INSTALL/MAINTENANCE PARTY! Sat Dec 22, 8am-5pm

Hey gang!
Ok, I've been lurking as a noob so I could save some coin to put some goodies on my XJ. And now that I'm about to order up my parts, it's time to contract some help!
I'd like to host a GTG/install party because I really don't know smack about my XJ, and I've only met a couple of you guys so it would be nice to meet a few more people to wheel with! Well, that, and this isn't exactly the sort of thing I could pick up a couple hombres from Home Depot to help me with. Sooo...
What I'd like to accomplish on Sat Dec 22:
- Install RE 4.5" Superflex kit
- Brake job (pads and shoes, fluid flush)
- Diagnose P0455 Large Evap Leak and hopefully fix
- Serp belt needs replaced desperately; general tune up perhaps
Optional install (if we have time, or if I even receive them in time):
- Rock sliders
- Front bumper
What I have to offer:
- Pizza and beer (yes, I take requests...let me know what your beverage of choice is!)
- Large driveway to work on
- Air compressor + 1/2" gun
- One 3 ton floor jack and a pair of stands (15"?)
- A harem of women to use as you wish*
What I DON'T have:
- Any SAE tools, though I could pick up a cheap SAE kit
- Hi-Lift jack
...let me know if you can bring tools to help out, or if there's some things that should absolutely stop and buy before the install party.
If you can come help out, please throw up a post! Thanks in advance!
*Harem of women not available on days that end in "y".

I would be glad to help out but the date is bad for me. Pretty well booked till after the new year..
BTW how is that crazy Volvo project coming along? I talked with you at one of the M&G in HB about it..

My best friend has been driving the Volvo for months after he totalled his Cobalt. I haven't even seen my car in I don't know how long. lol!
Then I picked up a VW Corrado to play with, and I'm having a nightmare of a time fighting the DMV trying to get it registered (the ownership history is a big SNAFU).
So then I decided F-this, I'm gonna turn my attention to the XJ for a while. :)

So that means they will be available on "Christmas" or tomorrow :)
I'd like to help but I'll be in the mighty midwest for the holidays.

Just so happens my X-mas plans got shot, but I'd be willing to give ya hand with my simple hand tools and a mighty big hammer.....worked for my lift =)
Of course, I have this locker that's been achin' to get in my front diff, so.... =)

SDXJ, I would love the help! Will send out phone # and directions closer to the 22nd. I may try to get some of the maintenance stuff out of the way first, so hopefully it will just be a lift kit install only...but with no manual, and this engine looking totally foreign (domestic?!) to me, I'm scared to do anything at the moment. :)

Ok...so I now have an RE 4.5" lift, Series 51 Rock Crawlers and 33x12.5 A/T's, a set of RS5000's and bumpstops waiting to go on. YAY!
I am a little afraid as some people are telling me to kiss my axles goodbye with 33's. I am planning to regear and add a rear aussie; which one of these would help to lengthen the lifespan of the stock D35 more if I had to do them one at a time?
And lastly, SO many mixed opions on a SYE. Needed, or no? Moderate wheeling; no Sledgehammer or anything like that!
Opinions appreciated...and Johnny...let me know what brew you would like! :)

on the street, without getting the rear end to full drop, you will be ok with a tcase drop. without it you are going to get bad vibration. for serious wheeling you need the sye.
as far as the 33s on the d35...... just be fore warned, the d35 is notorious for being weak, 33s are pushing it, and a locker is asking for it. to each his own tho. you never know for sure till you do it! :scottm:

Hrm. I lived at Chapman and Harbor for years - nowhere near garden grove.
I may be able to swing by. I can bring some bigger jacks, some more tools, electric impact, and maybe some knowledge. PM me a couple of days in advance to remind me so I don't double commit. :)

i ran 35's and a 4:1 t-case on a locked dana 35 keep a light touch on the go peddle and learn to finesse your rig and you should be ok. Im not the only one locked on 33's running the dana 35's around either so I know it can be done

If you haven't already spent any money on the d35, don't. Better off finding a d44 in the yards for cheap and regearing/locking that. Just my advice. Take it or leave it.
I'll stop by if I can too.

Yes, I've gathered that now...
Money on the D35 = Polishing a turd. lol.
I am gonna pray it doesn't break and hold out for a D44. :)
I am scared to death of not having something I need on the 22nd and not being able to complete the install...if someone who knows their stuff wouldn't mind shooting me their number, I would love to talk with someone to double check there isn't something else I should be ordering! I know how my luck usually goes with this stuff...lol!

Ok, it looks like I'll also have a PORC SYE kit to throw in. :) Ordered one last night, so I'm hoping it comes in time and I also have to find an '89+ Auto 4.0 front driveshaft to use with it. If someone has a driveshaft from an 89+, let me know, I'll take it off your hands!
I am so excited, I can't wait! I may be up for the trip on the 29th if I'm feeling brave with the 35!
How hard is it to install something like an Aussie? Special tools required or no?

No special tools needed for the aussie lockers... Just remove the cover, drain fluid, remove cross shaft bolt, and pull out old spiders... Insert locker per instructions.. and go have fun...

Ok guys...the install party is on like Donkey Kong! :)
I am picking up the parts on Friday. Here is my "ideal" list for Saturday, even though I won't hold my breath about getting it all done:
- Install RE 4.5" kit
- Install PORC SYE
- Trim fenders for 33's
- Brake job (changing lines anyway, may as well do pads!)
I am still looking for a couple things...so if anyone has the following, I will buy them from you assuming your price is fair and hopefully you can bring them with you on Saturday:
- Front auto 4.0 driveshaft (for SYE kit)
- Chrysler 29-sp 8.25 axle
Any and all help is appreciated, and pizza/beer/soda will be provided! Please bring tools; most of my tools are metric. I do have a couple ratchets (2x 3/4" and 2x 1/2"), a compressor and an airgun, but that's about it. I have a few stands and a decent floor jack. I may need a couple more stands, a Hi-Lift or two, SAE sockets, stuff like that. If need be, I can run and buy some last minute things. I have NO idea what to use to trim the fenders (angle grinder?! Sawzall?!), so if you have the proper tool please bring it!

Show up at 8am or any time thereafter! I will have to leave for work around 6:45. Hopefully we can get most of that stuff banged out in time. If not, we will have fun trying!
See you all there! :)

You've been soaking all the bolts in PB Blaster right?
Trimming fenders? Go to Harbor freight and pick up one of their air body saw and a few extra packs of blades.

Spraying and hammering the bolts tomorrow; 10-4 on the harbor frieght tool. Unless someone can bring me a saw to use on Sat, I will buy one of these. Thanks! :wave1:

you're luck if thats the only one that breaks, usually they all break. they either break the bolt or the tack welds on the nuts that the bolts go into snap loose. i just peeled the carpet back and cut access holes in the floor, its the easiest way to fix it.

My cheap ass drill bits have either broken or melted. Kind of at a standstill and getting pissed. I've effectively accomplished nothing so far today. May try to do the rear leafs I guess, then call it a day. What a bust. :(

Get your rear done. I'm heading down to san diego in a few to gear an axle, but can try to swing by tomorrow with some left hand drillbits and heat. Not commiting, but i'll see if i can make it happen.

Kinda hard to knock all that stuff out 3 days before xmas. Never goes as planned, you're always going to find stuff broken/braking unexpectedly that totally holds up progress. I'm sure alot of people were last minute xmas shopping too. I was actually thinking of coming by but I too was working on reenforcing my front bumper and got to head to the mall to get some last minute stuff myself.

Ah shit man, I'm soooo sorry! We had a server crash at work and I was in all day. As soon as I logged in it dawned on me. =(
I'm not sure what my weekend or my gas allowance is like, but if I can make it on monday, I'll do my damnedest....lord knows I'll be getting cabin fever by then....and I still got a aussie locker to throw in too before Feb 15....but I'd like to get it done sooner rather than later.
