Are there any advantages for buying a code scanner for a 1993 xj? I know how to pull the codes by the turn key method but will a code scanner tell me anything else that could be usefull information? Also is 1993 OBD-1? If there is an advantage what is a good scanner?

No there's no advantage to using a code reader on pre-96, OBD I systems. Once you get a numbered code, that's all there is to diagnose with.

On the other hand, a code reader or a scanner is a definite plus if you have a 96 or later OBD II vehicle. Although you can still get "key" codes on some of these models, they're OBD I codes and are not specific. If you use a code reader, you'll get a more specific code to pinpoint the trouble better......
