Are cushioned ball mounts a good thing? They sound good on paper, anyone have one? Any downsides to them? Just an example:

OK, I couldn't resist...
I can think of several situations where it would be nice to have a ball cushion. None of them involve towing :)
But, seriously (as possible) - How much trouble have you had towing with a regular hitch? I've never had any trouble. A cushion sounds like you're just introducing a weak link into the hitch.

I've never towed with something as light as an XJ before... I've towed with my parents '78 Caprice wagon and my '01 Dodge Ram. Neither one knew the trailer was behind it.

I had an empty 8' trailer try to pull my '86 Ram Charger off the road because I entered a corner too fast. A heavy tow vehicle didn't compensate for lapse of attention. Stay within the load parameters for the XJ, and always remember that you have a load back there and you should be fine.

As far as what the XJ will tow: That same trailer, 8x5x2, full of wet, steaming cow manure was no problem. I have no idea what that crap :D weighed.

I drove to Atlanta and back a few years ago - and had a 3000# weight penalty on the return trip (smallish U-Hell box trailer.)
Towed with a regular ball mount, and didn't have any trouble. Got close to the same fuel mileage, and had to think ahead with the braking just a bit (89 Limited...) I would imagine that later models - say, 1996 and up, with the dual diaphragm booster - would not have this problem so much.
Concur with what has been said before - keep in mind what you are doing, and the fact that your vehicle is not "normal" anymore, and you should be fine.

You're welcome. Permission granted to use that one - I think I came up with that one about the time I discovered my own mind was FIRMY and IRREVOCABLY in the gutter (about age seven, when my grandmother tried to explain to me what a "melon baller" was...)

I've never had any problem with uncushioned mounts except for noise. Usually the pins aren't precise enough to keep it from moving around a little, and it can clank, but it doesn't do any damage. On the other hand, I don't see any problem with the cushion. It might make things a little smoother, and if nothing else, if used frequently the back and forth movement will guarantee that the hitch doesn't rust solidly into the receiver.

In the Den, there is currently a poll, sponsored by Beej, concerning cushioned mounts.
As a member, you should, perhaps, participate http://home.vr-web.de/julia.evers/smileys3/s525.gif

The internal spring reciever ball plug is just a gimmick to make you think it'll make pulling the trailer smoother.

I was beginning to wonder. Don't want those repressed incipient homosexual tendencies to leak out. I'm a staunch homophobe  Ever notice how the thumbup smiley looks kinda like a...whoa! There it is again. Babes. Babes. Babes. Keep thinking Babes. Gotta get to the Den, quick.
