hand shifting a 231, cant find 4 high

I'm swapping from 2wd to 4wd and have a bar bolted to the transfercase shifter arm coming out of the case. Without the stops in the stock shifter, is it hard to get into 4 high? I seem to either get 2 high or neutral, it goes right through 4 high.

Similar situation,

I swapped in Grand Cherokee handles for the transfer case and gear shift.

Had to modify the shaft for the GC transfer case handle. I can get it in 4hi but it always pops out because it's not right up against the "stop". Any vibration (or a slight nudge from my leg) seems to move it out of 4hi.

However it stays in 4lo perfectly.
