Overpopulation + drought/lack of food = undersized deer...

Nice work man, I am glad to see that your doing your part. Now come to Missouri and I will put you up for an all inclusive deer slaughter to the likes of something you have never seen. We have such an over abundance of deer on our farm that we get a dozen nusicance tags plus everyone else that comes to hunt brings 2 or 3 tags and we have a hay day shooting those crop destroying pieces of sh*t. We loose about the first 15-20 rows around some of our crop fields to deer damage. It is not uncommon on opening weekend for us to have a 16' trailer loaded with deer and we give them to "Donate the Harvest" for the homless people.

One last comment...did you shoot those so well that it blew the little white spots off of them???!!! HAHA!!

Hmm, we must come from different places. I always learned to respect the animals I harvested...

My folks in MI have had problems with the venison population as well. Over 10 years, my brother pretty well demonstrated that control tags just don't work in that area. One summer, he took out over 80, and didn't make a dent in the population. Unfortunately, a lot of these ended up going to waste, the state laws changed at the time so that he could not donate the carcasses.

The only control method that reliably works in that area is 8 feet of woven wire fence around the entire orchard. Dad & my brother have put up 3 fences around a couple of hundred acres. Tankage and shorter electric fences did not work.

The population has been high for quite a few years now. The average intelligence of the hunters must be dropping, the venison intelligence sure as hell ain't increasing.

I was just reading an article the other day about the ever increasing population numbers. What really sucks for us and our farm/ranch is that we are located in a "management zone" that was established by the department of conservation and they have stipulations that you can not shoot a buck that has less then 4 points on one side, hence an 8 point buck. Well that is all fine and dandy for the urbanite hunters that are out for a record big buck, but it has absolutly caused total havoc on us farmers that are feeeding these damn deer with our crops. The studies have shown that in our specific zone that we have more then doubled our deer population in the past 4 years. Anotehr thing that gets me pissed about this is that when we have to claim on crop insurance, it causes our rates to go up and it is basically an endless cylce like was stated above by Chi. We have shot the living hell out of these things and it has not even satrted to put a dent in the population around our place. The only good thing that has come out of it is that was are able to gain a few extra dollars from the city folk that are willing to pay to hunt these nusicence animals. Along with this rant I am on, the information that I was reading was also backed with info from an insurance company that said that deeer/vehicle accident numbers had trippled in the same time frame! Once again, our great conservation department is ass backwards. It makes me pissed off when a deer is killed out of season the con dept says it was "their" deer...but when you hit one with your car they (the con dept) are not helping pay for the damage that "their" deer casused!! :rattle:

OK, I am done crying about this for now!
