What is the stock rim width on the steel rim is it 6 or 7 in.

It's also 15x6.
I can't seem to find any good pics of the 15x6, but it's a BASIC rim...nothing fancy about that one.
That would still be 5 on 4.5", and 5.25" backspace.

And don't forget late model XJ's had 16x7 with 5.25 backspacing as an option as well.

okay so 5.25 is backspacing stock almost always and 15 X 7 is the most common.

yes. You can get away with up to 32x11.5's on the stock 15x7's "ok", with some rubbing up front. It just barely clears at the leafs, but it clears. You won't lose as many beads as might be expected.
